Help me find my drink

That's a tough question, and the replies are varied. I have acquired quite the collection of liquor. crown royal does make one of the best Coke mixers, but it doesn't have the finess as a sipper. I have Crown Royal Limited Edition, Special Edition, and XR, and none of them have the finesse I prefer in a sipper. I am a Canuck and one of the Canadian products you cannot get here anymore is Forty Creek Four Grain. You Yanks can attain it though. Forty Creek also makes a decent Single Barrel.

Us canucks have some of the best mixers but they aren't the best sippers. I have been sampling the Bourbons lately and have a few excellent sippers. Buffalo Trace distilleries have the Antique collesction and the George T. Stagg is amaizingly smooth for 141 proof! The Pappy Van Winkel 20 year is worth adding to any collection. I have been collecting the Woodford Reserve Master Collection since it's inception and have been impressed as well. The 'regular' Buffalo Trace is decent for 'the buck'. I stay clear of the big marketers such as Jack Daniels (and Bacardi, Smirnoff, Cuervo, etc) since most of their products are inferior (although these companies have a few 'gems', 99% of their products are swill. I support the 'little guys' -- I WILL NOT EVER BUY AT WAL-MART)

One of my favorite sippers has been tequila. Many of the small producers make incredibly complex spirits. You are best to start out with the anejo 'aged in Bourbon casks' bottlings, but as your tastes develop you will probably return to the blancos/platinas.

Rum, though, is still my favorite. The marketers will make you think that Jamaican/Carribbean is the 'best' but the products from central America (Venezuela/Nicaragua) are incredibly complex especially for the price. The best rum IMHO is from Guyana. One of the bottlers is El Dorado, and their 21 Year Old is an incredible value!

Blantons is a good sipping whiskey.

I probably like Bulliet the best. Can't go wrong with Maker's Mark or Knob Creek.

I have enjoyd another bottle of Eijay Craig 18 and its real good at $38.00 .

I bought a bottle of Corner Creek Reserve bourbon whiskey and .....

I would not buy it again... Some bourbon rankking society said it was a 90 so I got it at at $27.99 and it reminded me of a real peaty scotch that taseted like chit.

Pay more and get something good.

Thank you, everyone, for your input. I have decided to try Old Rip Van Winkle. The 23 year old bottle is a little too rich for my blood, but I think a bottle of the 12 or 13 year old bourbon will do just fine.

Man, I love this place. There's always something new to learn about and be totally sucked into. :D

Let us know if it's better that that ole Santee Stump Hole!!!

I found a bottle of the Van Winkle 12YO special reserve at my local state store today. Will have to give it a try during the Super Bowl this weekend.

Bulleit with rocks or in a Manhattan…. Basil Hayden if it’s neat.

That’s just me; defiantly spent a lot of years drinking whatever was around, which was a lot. Considering my hangover recovery time is not what it used to be, I’m a lot pickier about booze. Also I quit smoking in 2004 and after that my sense of smell and taste became much more acute.

Bourbon: Elijah Craig 12 Yr.

Nice and smooth with much less bite than knob or makers mark. Has good bouquet as well - nice vanilla and char.

Also a ridiculous bang for your buck - probably one of the best values out there.

Its my bourbon of choice - in fact, sipping it as I type (and smoke) :D

Boss Hog would probably recommend Rebel Yell. Myself I would say Elijah Craig.

If Crown is stronger than you like, I'd ignore everyone who's recommending Bourbon or Tennessee whiskey. It sounds like what you're looking for is something without a strong flavor, and if that's the case, you're not going to find it there. If you're looking for smooth and light, maybe a nice blended Scotch (although I couldn't tell you which). Or maybe The Macallan, if you want to try a single malt.
