Hi there,

Long time lurker here (joined 2014) but first time poster. I am not really good at socializing I guess!

First of all I sincerely hope that asking these type of question is not against the rules, I didn't see anything like that, but in case it is, please forgive me! Secondly please apologise me for my English if I make mistakes as it is not my native language, thank you!

So, after all these years working hard I have bought few inexpensive knives that look good to me, that cut and do the job but I was limited by my near nothing budget. I am still not rich at all but today as my bday just passed I want to get myself a beautiful knife. I don't usually depend on others to choose but this time I'm lost into that much choice.

So I'm looking for a knife up to 100€ (European lurker :p)
Will be used as edc, cutting paper boards and lot of food
I'm not much into tactical aggressive looks but I'll take a look at everything

I have searched in direction of beautiful powder steels but not a lot of reference in my budget so I might need to lower my expectation for that.
Please feel free to advise your personal favourites and if you should need more info, I'd be glad to answer any question!

Thank you very much for all the information and beauty you offered me during all this time,
Cheers guys
Leo

A Victorinox Swiss Army Knife is always a good choice. Lots of models, price range to choose from. I've carried a SAK Tinker for about 25 years.

Can probably get a cold steel something in s35vn

Dunno anything else that cheap in particle steel

Are there size, opening, locking, or other restrictions we should be aware of ?

Sounds like you want/need a slicer, so obviously I’m going to point you towards the Spyderco line.

Welcome to BF. I know you are not asking for this kind of advice, but as you seem to be on a limited budget I will offer it anyway. If paper board is what I call card board (boxes), you might want to stick with your cheap knives or just one of those razor type cutters. Spend your money on the beautiful knife that will be for other uses. You should be able to get something really nice for 100 Euro.

Spyderco makes some very nice folding knives that do not lock. Also look in the Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades section of the forum for examples of other non-locking knives. Lots of great slip joints a made in Europe as well as the USA and many other places. RichS already mentioned Victorinox.

Be sure to post a picture.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for all the answers!

Thanks Rich, truth is I already have an SAK that I carry on a regular basis and I love it too. My father gave it to me like 25 years ago also, they are so strong! Thanks for good advice!

Yeah the cold 4 is nice and sub 100€, I'm adding it to the list, thanks!

Hey! As I mentioned I use my knife mainly to cut food and random stuff so I don't want a mini knife nor a giant one! Blade between 7cm to 9cm is great!
Opening and locking are equal for me, I am happy with a flipper with a lock and I also love old school slip joint, if fact the last one I was looking at was the fox libar which I find really beautiful but maybe a little bit small. I see all the Spyderco that everyone loves, I'm not a huge fan of the look but I might try at the end, thanks a lot for advice!

Thanks a lot for the advice! I'm looking into all type of advice! As for that one, you probably right.. I maybe was secretly hoping that I could find a perfect knife which I can carry as a gentleman knife and I could use for eat / work / wood / random stuff. :D
I am like my grandparents probably, they used their knife for everything. They were ugly tho (the knives)
Also no problem about locking system in my country!

Thanks all, you are very kind in your answers!

Not too big, not too small, good slicer, super steel would be nice, could be locking or not . . . hmm, that sounds like a Manly Wasp in S90V to me. 72mm S90V blade that is thin enough and flat ground to cut very well, and sort of half way between locking and not locking, as the slip joint mechanism has multiple stops and has a strong spring.

It's a great knife, I don't know why I don't carry mine more often. I usually only carry it when I'm in Canada, and the border is closed now, so I guess that's why, come to think of it. I know what I'm going to be carrying today now, though.

Maybe a mid to large Opinel?? Great slicers.
Rich

Yeah I have few of them, they are super cheap here! Less than 10 euros for classic ones, I have an engraved olive wood which is so nice, but i wanted something maybe fancier.. thank you for your advices Rich!

Hey Greg, the Mainly Wasp is currently on top position of my list, I'm really glad you named it, do you like it? I saw some reviews saying it is kind of meh..
I was not sure about the slip joint mechanism but if you say that it's good it would be a real contender for the buy! And for half price also!!

I've only bought one, so I can't speak to the average quality really, but I love mine. Here's a bad mobile phone photo I just snapped, not noticing that I'd left the tip of the blade out of focus, sorry:

Things I love about the Wasp in S90V:
  • Fantastic materials for the price
  • Great build quality, very sturdy little knife that feels like quality*
  • Very stiff backspring system with four stops--it's a slip joint, but you'd really have to work at closing it accidentally
  • Reversible deep carry clip that works well
  • Cuts better than most of my knives because it's a thin blade with a full flat grind, combined with a very wear resistant blade steel this produces about the best cutting experience possible, assuming you keep it sharp
* I admit I did break the edges of the blade spine on mine just a little, and this (for me) improves the general feeling of quality that I get from a knife

MKM Burnley Fara or Celina, m390 steel, made in Italy, in a high quality slip joint for <$100/euro
(Like the Fox Libar)

A few locking options;
TOPS MSF
Mcusta basic
EKA Swede 9
Buck Slim Pro; 110 or 112 depending on size preference

Manly resembles the Boker City Tech Tool 1 - good EDC at half the price. This forum is so helpful, we're all going to go broke ;)

Thanks a lot Greg for your awesome review! You are giving the wasp some good points! I'll wait for other advices for a few days before deciding!

Hi strategy, thanks a lot for your answer! I absolutely love those Italian lines! Mkm are doing such a great job but they unfortunately all above 100€ here and I cannot afford too much.. I absolutely love wood handles and those mkm are really nice!
I'll take a look on the others you advised, thanks!

Yeah I want to buy more than one now haha

Take a look at Otter Messer and Masserin.

Hi thanks for the answer! Honestly I am not to much a fan of the Otter Messer shapes! But ty for advising I didn't know those!

Masserin are beautiful but the nice ones are all in d2 and I have trouble with stains on my d2 knife, as I eat pretty much every day outside and sometimes cannot wash it really properly before some times.. I forgot to tell that in the beginning sorry!

CIVIVI Rustic Gent, perhaps?

It's beautiful! But d2 tho :(

I don't get a commission from Manly or anything, I just really like the knife.

I will say that 14C28N is a fine steel, and if you're worried about budget there is nothing that the less expensive steel can't do that the S90V version can. If you just want a fancy "super" steel, though, S90V is great and it's hard to find a better deal than a Wasp in S90V.

Here are a few more snapshots with my phone, hopefully with better focus this time:

Take a look at the "Ness", by Revo knives.

It's made in China, and some people are concerned about that. But it looks to be a good shape for a do-everything knife. I'm on my mobile so I can't post a picture. I will try to remember when I get home.

As for price? One place lists it for 65, USD. I'm an ignorant Yankee, so I don't know what that converts to....

Oh! You talked about problems with D2 in a later post.

Bollocks. The Ness' blade is D2.

Okay, well, I'm just going to go somewhere else and work on that "read before you post" thing....

Here's a search on BF-supporting dealer BladeHQ's site for folders within your budget and maximum blade length; there are lots of other filters you can add, too. I have it sorted high > low by price to filter out budget knives.

https://www.bladehq.com/cat--Manual...blade_length:3:3.49/sort:price_sort_desc:desc

I run searches like these all the time when I'm after some specific style/blade/whatever or just want to see what's out there. It's fun. :)

As for specific recommendations, based on what you've said about super steels and aesthetics you might want to take a look at the Kershaw Bareknuckle in CPM-20CV, available from KnifeCenter in gold and also from another US retailer (but not one that supports BF), or the Kershaw Knockout in M390 from USA Made Blade. I like the aesthetics of both knives, although of course that's subjective, and they're both a bargain for super steels.

CIVIVI makes some damascus-bladed knives with fancy scale materials in that price range too, and don't let their status as WE's budget line fool you -- they make nice knives. :)
