help me find the right fixed blade!

The BM 201 in D2 wouldn't be a bad choice. D2 is sort of "semi-stainless". It's the more stainless of the carbon steels. Personally I would lean more to the Rat3 in D2, which is the same price.

I'll add to it....
BARK RIVER!

Pretty much all of my users now are one of my Bark Rivers. The convex edge is absurdedly easy to maintain, and cuts like a dickens. I have sold others merely to buy more Barkies. There is a dedicated subforum over a knifeforums that will provide you with endless hours of information and plenty of enabling.

WoW this forum is seriously badass, I didnt think I would get so much advice so quickly! Thank you, everyone!

Yah, I'm still undecided and am not about to rush to just get one. I have to say yall are doing a great job of convincing me on the Bark River.. not that its a hard thing to do, they are beautiful! I am going to have a tough time deciding with all those different knifes and handle options.

I will probably buy a Bark River a later, but for christmas my girlfriend wants to get me a knife under $100..... since I am going to splurge on a bark river later, is there any particular knife (folder, fixed, bowie, other) under $100 that is overall considered as a favorite by most here? I know thats kinda vauge, but there is always those must have classics (doesn't have to be classic ;) )

thanks again!

Yeah, get a Bark River. Under 100$ will get you a Buck 119 which is a classic in the eyes of many. Use the extra dough for a night out on the town.

Having grown up on a farm, I agree with the man who suggested a good, inexpensive knife that wouldn't ruin your week if lost. Since you clearly suggested stainless steel, I would second the suggestion for a mora. Many of them are available in stainless that is highly regarded. Another inexpensive fixed blade with a handle that would work well in the cold is the Blackjack Small. It's available at New Graham Pharmacy for around $23.

If you're going to get a Bark River later (as you should;)), why not get a nice folder to pair up with it? A Swiss Army knife or multitool is pretty functional around a farm, ranch, or shop, but you could also get a beautiful traditional folder from Case, Queen, or Boker if you want something "classic".

I doubted that post when you said there weren't any Highland's available. I went to both and you're right. Both sites are sold out of Highlands!!! That's a first.

I have a RAT-3 and, while I don;t have a BM Snody 201, I have several Benchmades and am very familiar with the 201. You'll be more than happy with it (once you learn the magic that is sharpening D2 steel - Good Luck!) I would choose the 201 over the RAT-3 anyday for quality, design, and attention to detail. If Benchmade were to offer the 201 in 154CM or S30V, for example, I would have bought one months ago.

Bark river mini north star. Great little fixed blade, with a very good price. I was using mine the other day, and when I went to put it away, I absent mindedly tried to close it, before I realized that it wasn`t my pocket knife. Even though it`s small, I`m sure that it would dress up a larg buck, or pig with no problems. The blade is 12c27 , whch I find takes, and holds a good edge, for being stainless.

Queen Hunter fixed blade in D2, for under 50.
Three different blade shapes and three different handle material.
A quality knife

Knowing you'll be buying a bark river later, and being that you seem more the functional type than the collector type, I'd stay away from getting another fixed blade. Instead I'd get something to compliment that bark river you'll be getting. A nice folder would make sense. If you want a bunch of tools, maybe a full size SAK with the locking blade? Rucksack, Outrider, Hercules, One Hand Trekker... If you just like a single blade, then there are a number of VERY nice spydercos and Kershaws (Benchmade is going to get over $100 for the nicer ones). I have a Kershaw Lahar that I absolutely love. $50ish bucks and you get a flipper with G10 handles and VG-10 steel. Spyderco Enduras are nice.

You'll have to give us some preferences if you think you're going to go the folder market. i.e. do you like metal handles or composite material handles? Single blade or multi-tools? Tactical or traditional? Opening Stud, Opening hole, Flipper, Assisted Openers? Pocket clip, or pocket carry?
