Help me fix defective grind on RAT5

attachment.php

I just got a RTAK-II wich I took out for a hike saturday and it was scary sharp out of the boxe and after a day of chip chop it didn't have any dent on it...I'm very impress with this blade. I also have a RAT-3 in D2 wich was also very sharp...to me Ontario knives are great!!!

Nice report. It sounds like you got your money's worth out of the class. It's interesting to see how closely the RAT matched the school's criteria for an ideal survival knife. No accident there.

The "skull crusher" pommel was added at the suggestion of military and law enforcement personnel, but it's for breaking auto glass, not skulls. I rounded mine off on the grinder and hit it with cold blue. (my pommel, that is...)

Agree on the choil/jimping: they're both well done, and work well together.

From your pic it looks like there's no recurve to the belly of the blade. Did you profile that out, or was it like that out of the box? Most of the RAT-5s I've seen have a slight recurve, including mine, and I'm thinking of "fixing" it.

I did not profile it out; it's stock. Interesting that your RAT5 has a recurve ... do you think it was intentional?

I don't think so, but I don't really know. The recurve is very slight, too minor to seem like it serves an intentional purpose. I'm guessing it's just a "tendency" that occurs on some samples from Ontario's ground-by-hand process. My RAT-7 is straight.

Gotcha. I'm considering a RAT7 as my next Ontario blade.

Awesome knife. Own one in D2 and love it. I also have a RAT-3 in D2....

When I first received my RAT-7 the profile wasn't bad...not as sharp as I like...and the serrations had clear burrs. I don't know why I didn't really think about it before this thread.....

About 2 minutes with a DMT Diafold Serrated Diamond Knife Sharpener ...burrs gone and nice and sharp......about 5 minutes on the DMT Dia-sharp sharpeners....blade just like I like it. Done.

:D
