----------------------------------------------

ok need ur guys help. trying to find a nice EDC and self defence if need be, folding pocket knife, and stabbing power.. for my sister. somthing that can be neglected a little maybe alot (low mantainence), holds an edge for a good time, and possiblly not defininately, pink/purple/blue handle or anything with appealing color, purse friendly (lightweight), pocket clip, small maybe 2-3" cutting edge on plain blade.

used is prefered so i can grab it for under $35. she dosnt carry a knife, and i think its about time.

im really digging the spyderco delica 3 .. just having trouble with the color, under $35..
any other suggestions?

thanks and happy new year.

Self defense doesn't go well with a 2"-3" blade length. Just get her Kershaws rainbow leek/chive. You can get a blem leek for $35 from kershawguy.com and a chive blem for $25

The delica is a great choice. If you want something for edc / defence go bigger and get a stretch or endura.im no girl but if I was I would like blue or purple handle, both of which they come in

that leek is lookin nice. wonder if shes end up cutting herself, using that frame lock.. those delicas seem to be safer to close, gotta remove ur hand and reach back to the lock.. and the sharpening factor, r those leeks tricky to sharpen?

ive looked at enduras but not finding any with plain blade, and a handle she wouldnt consider "boring". girls, hehe.

also trying to consider somthing that dosnt look so nasty. i dont think she would need to take it out at work (hospital / office) but should be able to. i found a leek in pink, but still it looks pretty fierce.

Get he a vic classic and some pepper spray, a lot safer.
Just think about some big dude in a dark alley, and your sis pulls out a knife, he is going to punch her in the face grab the knife, hold it to her throat and precede to rape her.
Same situation , she pulls pepper spray, sprays and runs, dials 911 much safer.

Kershaw Leek is a perfect EDC and is very people friendly.
It doesn't look as scary as you think it might lol.
I carried one for a long time and regularly got complimented on how pretty or "cute" it was.
The Frame or Liner lock mechanism is very easy to operate and is quickly learned.
The Wharncliffe blade makes for easy sharpening since it doesn't have any curves. Just straight across the stones.

Another one to look at is the Spyderco Dragonfly. I would suggest the Dragonfly Tattoo. It's a pretty knife, small, packs a lot of cutting power, and has a great steel. Spyderco also is coming out with a Pink FRN Dragonfly. I'd still go for the Tattoo however.

I second BladeChick's statement that the Leek is easy to sharpen on stones. That said, I would recommend the Delica for all-around use by a non-knife person since the tip on the Leek is so fine.

I also second the recommendation of pepper stray over a knife for self defense. A small folding knife in the bottom of a purse most likely won't even be found in time to make a difference in a self-defense situation and even if it is an untrained person isn't going to do enough damage with it rapidly enough to stop an attacker before bad things happen. Your number one defense (okay, number two after situational awareness) is distance and a self-defense weapon should help you maintain distance, not allow the attacker to close to within knife-fighting distance. In those terms: gun>pepper spray>knife. Notice which one is last? Contact distance is not where you want to be, particularly if you're smaller than the attacker.

No matter what she carries she'll also need to know how to use it and pepper spray is the best combination of effectiveness and small learning curve. Since you said the knife will probably be neglected in her purse I doubt she's the type to maintain proficiency with a gun or knife.

thanks so much everyone for the ideas. my first thought was the pepper spray, and ive brought it up before, would need a licence to carry it here in my state.. and since this is a gift i thought a surprise with a cool knife would be nice. i will push for the pepper spray aswell.

the more i think about it, im leaning towards the leek. if i were to guess what her prefered style of knife would be, i would almost 100% say dagger. and that leek is very similar to a dagger, and its available in pink. only thing i worry about is dropping it on its tip, everything else fits the bill pretty well. still considering the delica tho.. may not find it in a girl friendly color, but i think she'd dig the style.. and she does like black.

nice to hear it from a chick too hehe.

>> hows that steel on the leek btw?

Leeks have been very well received by the women in my family, not only do they like 'em, but they actually use and carry them. Find out what color she likes and have at it.

If you're going to go with the Leek (they are great cutters, by the way) you can't get much more "girly" than the rainbow version. They are pretty flashy though, people will definitely notice it when she uses it.

I would go for a purple delica for my sister. I bought mine a pink native for her bday, those work well too. I like vg10 better than s30v for ease in sharpening

Who's willing to bet kershaw would replace the leek if the tip snapped? Or you could get a pink SOG flash 1. Just throwing tthat out there. It's cheap got a safety and the lock requires her to take her fingers away from the blades path. I'm not sure if the sog comes plain edge in the pink version, but I don't think she'd care since she's new to knives. She might even like it better since they stay sharp longer.

The steel on the leek is typical kershaw. 14C28N. You could get a composite leek, but then you don't get your colors unless you do a franken leek............I have a new idea.

I agree. The notion of an untrained individual using a knife for self-defense will most likely get them injured or killed. Knives are great for cutting things, not people. Get some bear mace instead.

I beg to differ. I think that most knives excel at trying to cut my thumb clean off. :p

You might also want to consider asking her if she wants a knife before gifting it to her. Not all chicks - or guys either - are into sharp things. We assume that because we are enlightened, everyone else is too, but that is not always the case.

The steel on the Leek is Sandvik 14c28n.
It takes an edge easily and holds it's edge for a good amount of time.
Assuming this will be an EDC for a woman and a lot of it's use will be tape, tags, packages, and envelopes, the steel would be perfect for her.
The fine tip really isn't an issue. It helps with more stabby things, like stabbing into tape on a box and then slicing.

I would definitely say Leek. The Dragonfly is perceived as "cute" by a lot of women as well.

This being said, there are a couple of other knives that she may like. There's the Spyderco Grasshopper or Kiwi which is just full SS and is a slipjoint. However they have no problem staying open. 8cr13mov is very easy to sharpen and will hold it's edge well, especially for simple EDC.

The Spyderco Squeak also comes into mind. This one comes in Pink FRN or Black(Pink for her). Has n690co steel which is comparable to VG-10 or 154CM. Takes an edge EXTREMELY easy and holds it's edge like a champ. Very low maintenance. Nice slicey blade with a good tip for penetration but not a super duper fine tip. Doesn't lock but won't close easily during use, and has a choil for extra control. Low ride clip and 2" blade for discrete carry and a small friendly size. I can't say enough good about this little knife.

Here's a couple pics of my Black FRN Squeak with my Spyderco Paramilitary 2 and Vodka. Lol. The Squeak in the open position is just barely bigger than the Para 2 Closed. Maybe 1/8"(or a tiny bit more) longer.

Squeak is the perfect girl/purse knife in my opinion. Can't believe I didn't think of that earlier.

Pepper Spray for Self Defense. So get her the Pink Squeak and Pepper Spray in a Pink Holster. Perfect set.
