I discovered this 36 inch piece of blade steel hiding in the corner of my garage.
Here is what I know about it:
It was purchased around 2008-2009 most likely at a gun or knife show in Phoenix.
It is marked in marker
sc01 or scol
1/8 x 1 1/2
$49.95

I vaguely remember wanting to make some fillet knives, realizing I don't have that level of skill, and putting it aside.
I highly doubt it is anything but some stainless alloy.

You can see pictures in this imgur album:

Thanks!

I guess it could be, but I've never done any forging, and all my other stock removal steel is a stainless alloy.

It's really just about impossible to tell just by looking at a picture. O1 would have been my guess based on the letters alone, but for a 1-1/2" x ~1/8" x 36" piece of O1, I think $50 is asking an bit much. I would have guessed something like 440C stainless, or possibly even 154cm?

I suppose you can do a spark test and some basic heat treat tests on a sample or two to make a semi-educated guess, but aside from taking a sample to a lab, you'll only be guessing.

It really could be anything, you are right. I was kinda hoping someone would recognize the number on it.
I have asked here and on Reddit, and struck out. I'll probably never know.

I sure am interested in how you figured out it was A2 steel from that link. The only A2 I see in there is in the line of a description of bolts, just part of the part number.

I'm thinking O1 myself. And the SC may be SG, "surface ground".
