Help Me Lubricate My Folding Knives

I have mixed and used Castor Oil and Clove Oil. I have also mixed and used Mineral Oil and Clove oil. The Mineral Oil and Clove Oil worked best. I now use this on all my knives. It works, it's cheap, and is perfectly safe on food use knives. A long with many other uses.

Mix is not critical but I use

16 oz Mineral Oil. Readily available at Drug store or usually cheaper at the grocery store.

1/16 oz of Clove Oil. (1/8 oz absolute Max) Be careful with pure Clove oil. While used as a flavouring for many years it is Very strong and could be dangerous if ingested in pure form.

With 1/8 oz Clove Oil, this formula rubbed on the skin is also good for repelling mesquitos, and placed on the gum above a tooth ache will ease the pain.

I've tried just about all of them and found that Shooters Choice FP-10 (mentioned above) gives me the best results - specifically with respect to pivot lubrication.

It only takes a couple of drops, then working it in. It dries completely and does not change any of the tolerances.

Second best on my list is Militec 1.
However, I don't use it because IME FP-10 works better - and I really do not like the smell of Militec 1.
 
Damn, I read that and the ultimate lubricant thread and in the end there's never any resolution!

Never has been, never will be! Everyone has their own opinion on what works best.

This is almost like asking "what would you consider to be the best EDC under $100?". :eek:

I still just use what I have on hand. When the knife is dirty enough to clean, well... it needs to be cleaned properly anyway which can happen anytime. And when properly lubricated, the lubricants don't wind up on the blade (not much anyway), so I don't worry about ingesting them. How much is left to worry about after a good wipe? I don't actually eat off my knife blade very often.

This subject seems a bit tougher than it is.

FP-10 is my favorite gun oil. However any knife that may be called upon for skinning game or preparing food even slightly will not see any petroleum products.

This has been covered in the past, but mineral oil is a petroleum product.

There can, at times, be an irrational fear in these threads over having petroleum products touching food or, more broadly chemicals. Everything is a chemical.
 
I use Corrosion X. Thinking of having one of my blades NP3'ed just for kicks.
 
I almost never lube a knife.

On the rare times I do, I hit it with WD-40 (mineral oil + mineral spirits) and wipe off the excess.

But I hold no grudge against those who are serial lubers. :thumbup:
 
I have a can of food grade silicone that I refresh a piece of lambs wool with, to use here and there on knives and guns. It's a 10oz spray can made by CRC and I got it ordered for me by my local True Value hardware store.
 
I put some air tool lube on one of my folders on a whim. I didn't have to clean or maintain it for at least a year afterward.

So that's one thing you might look at.
 
When there's washers I use CRK Flourinated Grease. When there are no washers or I'm lubing an OTF I use Valve/Key/Slide oil. It's used on Brass Instruments and is food safe and weatherproof. Two small drops is all I need. I'll also use a small amount to coat high carbon and tools steel blades for rust prevention.
 
Boy, I have washer knives and non-washer knives!

I'm not buying anymore darn lubes - Rem-Oil never hurt anything.

It wipes off Zytel and G10 grips real easy as well as my shotgun stocks and I've never had a spot of rust on any knife.

Even my 20 yr. old Swiss Army Knife that I brought up to "as new" condition with a 1 month Corrosion-X soak, ending yesterday.

Corrosion-X lifted out the gunk and crud - but not a speck of rust or corrosion is on it. It was always Rem-Oiled.

I spray a tiny squirt in the pivot joints and then some on the blades (gun metal) then wipe them until they're bone dry.

I don't eat with the knives and I don't hunt anymore. So what the heck?
 
I go to Radio shack or in Canada the source now and get a precision oiler.It's a clear tube with a needle nose and is filled with teflon oil.
 
Is the Rem-Oil better than the Rem-DriLube? Anyone tried Beeman (air rifle) MP-5 oil, or Tri-Flow? What's wrong with plain old 3-in-1 oil? Is any lube significantly better or worse than the others for any reason? Do any of you feel (as I do!) like you need to disassemble and clean the knife once in a while before lubing? Thanks.
 
I would think that any quality oil will work just fine and includes Rem Oil and 3 in 1 Oil. I guess we all have our preferences and I have been using Miltec 1 for the past three years with excellent results, before that it was Tuff-Glide, also with excellent results, before that it was Rem Oil, again with excellent results. Btw, I use the Miltec without heat and after it sits overnight it seems to work better.
 
I just finished my second folder with Militec-1

I heat the pivot joint with a blow dryer and applied two drops on top and bottom. Worked the blade a dozen times with each side in the up position and wiped off excess with cloth and q-tips. Repeated 3 consecutive 24 hr days.

After 3 applications of Militec with heat and everything bone dry again, I used a couple of drops of Latama's Quick Release.

I'm extremely happy with the results. Most of the fun is probably in the extravagant ritual though!! ;)
