Help me out with this nagging question...

I'm currently into the large/small knife combo. Seems right for me at present. But what I have justifying is where the mid sized (approx. 6") blade fits in. Other than that fact that I just love them... ;)

I don't carry two knives of the same size. My EDC is a small, thin, fixed blade scandi, and it goes everywhere with me. When I'm in the woods, I strap on a larger fixed blade belt knife that is appropriate for the tasks and terrain. If I'm on an extended outing, I'll bring an axe or a large chopper as well.

Possible reasons for carrying multiple similar knives might be:

  • Using one as a dedicated working knife and another as a 'clean' food prep knife (this is also relevant if you want to keep a close eye on the tools that come into contact with food when hiking / fishing in bear country)
  • Having two knives with different grinds for specialized tasks - perhaps convex or flat for regular work and a scandi for easy fuzz-stickery.
  • You're Bushman5 ;)

All the best,

- Mike

What he said!

as much as i'm known for using large knives for everything, i DO like using my smaller knives. Hell, i just like playing with knives, and thats why i rarely have less than 6 knives on me at any given time. :p

Who cares? Different strokes. People are always going to prefer different tools for the same task. I have an axe, hatchet, golok, folding saw, 4 inch blade, 6 inch blade, Vic Farmer, and a few others. I carry different knives at different times depending on my mood and what I want to do. I could definitely simplify and carry less blades, but I enjoy using what I perceive to be the best tool for each task.

I don't carry choppers unless I'm car camping, otherwise I will always have my EDC folder, a 4-6" fixed blade, and a multi-tool.

My folders could tackle anything that I do with a knife, but I like to save them for having that shaving sharp edge. My 4-6" fixed blade is the beater knife that I can use and abuse and not feel guilty about. It's the one that gets dirty and can be batoned with if necessary.

The Multi-tool (leatherman for me) is used to repair gear, pick up that hot cup/pan off of the fire, and to assist with fishing. I always like having a good pair of pliers close at hand :)

personally i just like playing with my knives. i don't get out to go into the woods that often these days, so when i get a chance, i take a few knives so i get a chance to use them all.

Send this man a prize!

^ I would fathom a guess that many folks carrying 2+ knives fall in the same category- this is bladeforums after all :D

I tend to be a bit of a gram pincher- small fixed blade and a light folding saw (occasionally a small axe) seems to get the job done for me

the one exception is when I'm big game hunting, I do carry two knives- small, thin blade for gutting; longer, thicker blade for splitting the rib cage

i always carry a SAK OHT...when im out i always have a machete and usually a 3"-6" fixed blade.

i think it depends more on what your goals are for what youre gonna carry than carrying out of necessity.

I always have a small kinfe or two with me for first aid and rough minor surgical work in the boonies. Hard to use even a larger folder for digging out splinters or lancing infections or blisters. Over the years I've had to do quite a bit of that with humans, dogs, and horses. BTW, haven't killed a 'patient' yet. I've even done some fairly fancy stitching up when I had to, especially on horses, couple of times on humans. Bear in mind I harken back to the days before everyone had radios/cell phones and there were no rescue helicopters. When someone got injured way out there we were on our own.

For many years , I used to carry just one knife , usually a 110. Now, that I own many , I like to bring the trio thing: axe or hatchet, 5-6" fixed , and a folder in the 3' range to cover all the things I need to do. Said that , when I look back , I did everything as a young man with that old Buck , except split larger wood. This included fuzz sticks, cleaning fish ,tent pegs , etc, etc. If I'm going light , I only bring a 5-6" fixed blade. These include: CS SRK , SOG Northwest Ranger , Fallkniven S1 or A1 , or a Becker. When I bring too many , I never use them all anyhow , so I don't any more. But I do rotate my selection once in a while. :)

These three for me

Hatchet, 4 inch fixed blade and a folder.

Kind regards

I carry one big knife and one small knife.
My big knife is my 4" mora.
My small knife is a SAK classic

I carry the classic because I don't like trimming my toenails with the mora.

I'm of this school of thought as well. When I head out it's normally with a multitool, a folder, and a 3-5" fixed blade. Often times I do without the fixed blade, but not normally. I like to play with knives too but I enjoy being outside and enjoying my surroundings more. I know, I know, call me what you want since this is a KNIFE forum but that's how I roll out and about :)

I am 1 of those guys you speak about. My belt knife is a 4" scandi. That is what I use for most of my tasks.
In or on my pack I usually have the RC-5. I use that if I have to split or pry wood. Or any other tasks that I feel may be too hard for a scandi. It also has the bow drill divot that I use alot.

Also in the pack is a good sized folding saw. :)

Unless I'm going out to test some blades or take comparison photos etc., I travel pretty light bladewise. I own several but seldom carry my BAKs. Just not a lot of need for them in my outings. Usually a medium and smaller fixed blade, a Leatherman, a pair of light pruners (these see a lot of use wending my way thru multiflora rose), and sometimes a small axe.

Bravo 1, Bumblebee (until my Bravo Necker 2 shows up :)), Leatherman Wave, Gerber Pruners, and Timberline axe. There's usually a Kershaw Chive or Scallion in my pocket, too.
