Welcome to the forums! How about eye hand coordination, manual dexterity, first aid procedures, etc...

Maybe you should tell him why you want one and not why we think you should get one. Welcome to the forums.

thanks guys for your responses but my dad understands why i want it (looks cool, addicting to play with and is fun) but he wants to know whats so great about it from any other knife (from a mature parental perspective) help me out

A well made balisong has the one of the strongest locking mechanisms of any folding knife. It is also an excellent utility tool. Every person should carry a knife as they come in handy for so many things, and the balisong is an excellent choice for a carry piece, provided it is legal where you live.

the balisong is:
-A very versitle knife
-able to be quickly opened or closed, making it more useful
-as strong as a fixed blade. meaning it wont break on you (if you have a good bali, that is. depends on what you're getting)
-an artform of it's own, teaching hand-eye coordination and strengthening finger muscles
-able to flip down to half it's size in a second, making it easily concealable
-able to be used as a kubotan when closed (a kubotan is basically a hard object used for prodding pressure points, disabling an attacker)
-able to teach you responsible use of a knife (yeah, I know. any knife would do the same)
-useful every day
-also useable as a nutcracker!
-very high on the coolness scale
-useful in picking up chicks! (well....not really...)

and many many other things.

Just out of curiosity, how old are you? From what I've seen of your grammer (the fact that you don't use capitalization or periods) you must be fairly young. Maybe that is why your dad is hesitant to allow you to have one. Or maybe your father knows something we don't.

im 15 years old and im just typing quickly not minding periods or proper grammer is that ok or is that a problem?

it's just a little annoying, but at least you're not mashing words together and misspelling everything.
and you cant be in that much of a hurry

P.S. I got my first bali when I was 16, throwing knives when I was 15, and others before that. so I dont really think age is the issue

Got my first bali when I was 16 or so .. and my dad bought me that.

Just tell him, a bali is as good as any folding knife is with a plus: the manipulation you can learn and it helps your hand training.

I just thought that instead of using the two balls Chinese traditional hand massage (twirling two balls in your hand, about the size of a tennis ball, made of polished metal/stone) to improve your circulation and activeate your accupresure points in your palm/finger, why not using balisong manipulation?
No research has been done yet, but when we are all old and still manipulate, I think our heart disease risk should be lower than average people ..

I've had this discussion with people before. Sometimes there's no easy way around it if the person is stubborn. But try to get him to understand that it's a skill that you'd like to learn. A skill that will take time and effort. Parents like that. Heck, take him to a balisong website and let him see that they're not just for street-thugs like many seem to think. You don't want to by a "knife". You want to invest your time in a worthwhile hobby. Like a ham radio, only cooler.

Just don't forget, he IS your father.

Good luck with the sales pitch and welcome to the forums!

If your 15 years old, then your Dad should have started to teach you 3 years ago, how to handle a knife. It's obvious that your a rich city kid, who can afford to hire people to cut your grass, butcher your food and make your clothing. Even build your house.

Still rich kid or not, everyone should learn how to use a knife and they should learn some of the basic survival skills. A Balisong is as good as any knife to begin with, because in the closed position it is safe to carry. Unlike a kitchen knife that is dangerous to carry. If a parent does not buy a knife for their kids, usually they will be playing with the kitchen knives.

When teenagers master the use of a simple cutting tool, then they can move onto more complex and vastly more dangerous cutting instrament like power saws and so forth. I know a 16 year old who last a finger to a power saw, because he was moved into it to fast, and they did not teach him proper respect. In fact, I know a lot of people who have lost a finger or even fingers.

So, it's best to start off with a simple tool like a Balisong or any other pocket knife, then move into fixed blades with a sheath, and from there onto more complex tools when the parent feels that the teenager can handle it without hurting themselves.

My wife could handle any sort of knife by the second grade. But she comes from a poor family and they could not always afford to hire someone to do there work for them. Thanks, JohnR7 www.BalisongKnife.com

I thought I recognized the name somewhere!! I've had a lot more computer problems the past couple days, this is the second time I've had to use my Restore Disks to re-format my computer.
