Help me pack:) What am I forgetting?

Notebook and pencil. Also a mini-Sharpie, not sure if that will work in the cold but the pencil will for sure. Good for jotting down where you found that eagle's nest or whatever. Or, "To whoever finds my frozen body, I hereby bequeath all my worldy belongings to GibsonFan." ;)

Reading material is a must too, surely you're going to bring your favorite survival guide and try out all the cool tricks!

If you don't take a pad you could easily freeze, or at least be VERY cold at night. That's the biggest life saving thing there, unless you plan on having a monster fire with a reflector.

I'd pack a small revolver, but that's just me. :D

May be i missed it but you have to take a whetstone. I use a small diamond/ceramic one and it's useful.

Have a nice trip.

I'll make sure to add you to my will ;) If anybody wants anything, you better take dibs before Gibson gets it all  I will bring a book for in the evening but, my two biggest things are going to be wildlife observation and photography.

I will be picking up a pad based on everyone's suggestions here. As for a revolver, I don't own any guns :o

I plan to add a medium and fine ceramic to my pack.

.....A gun.

Don't have one :( Spend all my $$$ on knives and gear :o

Looks like you got it covered. Others mentioned some good stuff too.

Sleeping pad is critical but you can cut boughs to augment the pad as well. Try for a foot thick at least.

I am out in the winter crap a lot training and searching for lost people and the one thing I load up on is those 8hr handwarmers. They are the bomb. When your feet or hands are cold throw one of those puppies into your socks and gloves and you are good to go. I carry at least 8 on missions overnight.

FYI you have to squeeze and shake, squeeze and shake them for a good 10 mins to activate them good in cold temps.

Manage your water well. Store your nalgene upside down so the ice forms at the bottom ;). Melt snow before you bed down and get it good and hot and use your nalgene or bladder as a hot water bottle in your bag. Crimp your bladder hose shut tight ;).

The keys to sleeping well in winter are ground insulation, going to bed warm to begin with (run around and do chores before turning in) but dont sweat.

Wind break 100%. No air circulation to trap ambient heat. Small shelter for minimal airspace to heat. I like sleeping next to a roaring fire with an open shelter front if the wind is not bad. Collect tons of wood if you plan on this.

Place shelter carefully and let people know EXACTLY where you will be and return time in case of trouble.

High calorie, fat and protein snacks.

Enjoy!
