Help Me Pick a $65.00 EDC

I have $65.00 in my PayPal account for a new EDC. I am a big fan of Benchmade and Spyderco but am also considering some others.

EDC for me will be a knife to open boxes, scrape glue, cut cardboard, slice paper and occasionally some heavier chores like cutting small wire (computer or speaker type wire and maybe some heavier gauge stuff once in a while) or rope.

I like pocket carry and clip carry but I am thinking for this knife that clip carry will work better because my only free pocket it my right-rear. I could pocket carry in my right-front, but my keys are in that pocket so it would get crowded.

I need to stay under $65.00 including shipping and am open to any other opinions.

Right now I am looking at the BM Mini-grip in 154CM and the Fallkniven U2. I haven't decided which Spyderco I like.

Get the mini grip. They are great knives. The Axis lock is arguably the best lock on the market. Mine takes and holds a very good edge and I have used it for all kinds of fun stuff. The only problem with it is that once you get it you will be compeled to get more Axis lock knives.

You really can't go wrong with a Mini-grip. I miss mine. :(

You might also want to look at the new Spyderco Delica. I like my older Delica, and have handled the new one at the local knife store. The new Delica is much nicer -- steel liners, adjustable pivot, and stronger tip.

As suggested, the firts 2 off the top of my head are the min-grip and Delica. You can't go wrong with either.

Spydie Native would be a good choice for that stuff. And at $40 with an S30V blade, its hard to beat for a beater knife.

There you go, another good one that can be had at Wal-Mart.

You can get a Blade Tech Pro Hunter Lite for around $50, spend the rest on a nice lunch. It's a really good knife for the money, I've been EDC'ing one since Christmas.

Oh, and whatever knife you pick, consider also carrying a leatherman for the wire. Or get one of those teeny tiny pairs of Xcelite cutters, they can cut most everyday stuff and still fit in the back pocket easily.

How does the S30V steel hold up to the hard stuff? Is it a harder steel like D2? Or a little softer like 154CM? I actually prefer the softer steels (or the steels that aren't hardened as much) because they seem to bend rather than break in hard use. That and it's easy to maintain the edge on my jeans or a good strop.

I may have to go look at the Native. About what size is it compared to the Mini Grip?

The only reason I don't already have the Mini Grip is because I have owned a bunch of them and wanted to maybe try something different. The Mini Grip is so good it's boring! Is that possible? Heh!

I'd go with the Endura 4, which is a great knife and way under your price limit, or a Griptilian in 154CM, an amazing folder with the great AXIS lock and one of the most comfortable handles in the market.

If you have to cut wire often I'd go with the Endura and use the extra money to get a Wenger SAK with pliers. Pliers on Wenger knives have a better wire cutter than Victorinox ones. I wouldn't use any knife to cut wire.

Spyderco Endura 4, Delica 4, 93mm Rescue.

Benchmade Griptillians/Mini-Griptillians.

Can't go wrong with any of those.

The D'Allara Drop Point is another choice. It has the ball bearing lock too. Another Spyderco (one that seems to get overlooked) is the Scorpius. The Native is about 4" long closed.

Well, when I say wire, I don't mean solid copper, I mean stranded, like speaker wire. And I have been using knives to cut that sort of wire for years with no problems. The only knife that ever gave me any trouble with cutting stranded wire was an Ontario with a D2 blade. It kept chipping which is why I wanted to stick with the less hardened metals. How does the S30V compare to 154CM?

If you have to use paypal, go with the mini-grip.

the kershaw storm 2 is a dandy and can be had a wally world. ever thought about a leek ? and also another vote for the endura 4 for the price hard to beat. later, ahgar

I am not a big Kershaw fan and at this point am probably going to go with what I know, the Mini-grip.

come on don't go with what you know, lash out into the great unkown and plunk down your 65 for something different. you could get like 6 opinels, or a couple of sodbusters. although the mini-grip is probably a dandy. still there are a ton of knives out there and you owe it to yourself to explore a little. later, ahgar
