Help me pick a bowie!

discountinued models and factory seconds. The seconds have cosmetic flaws only that shouldn't scare off someone who wants to use a knife anyway.

That BK9 actually looks pretty good. Only 2.25oz over what I had in mind. Do the handle scales come off easily? Depending on the feel I might replace then with wood. I need to find someone who has one of these so I can check it out.

Yep, they are held on with allen head cap screws. Easy to replace.

I found this Windlass bowie on Ebay. Description from Atlanta Cutlery is:

GREAT WESTERN BOWIE
Supremely functional and solid. This is a great looking knife and is as imposing in the hand as it is on display in your home or office. The West never did anything small and the hardboiled frontiersman knew what worked. High carbon steel, brass and solid wood could be a cowboy's best friend when put together like this. A piece no collector should be without. 15 1/2" overall. Blade 10" long. Wt. 1 lb. $84.95

Came unsharpened, and how has a nice convex edge. Snicked some 5/8" limbs off the maple tree in the yard. No edge deformation. I would guess the RC is around 55. This has a tang about 1/2" x 7/32" ending in a threaded stud. It seems reasonably well made for a knife. I doubt it would hold up chopping hard wood, but it IS a knife, not an ax or khukuri.

The scabbard is a plain leather cover with no frog or stud.

I kind of like it. Fit and finish are certainly acceptable. Good value for what I paid on Ebay.
