My brothers and I have decided that after 25 years of getting the short end of the stick from his sons its time for dad to get a decent fathers day gift. So instead of spending $30ish bucks and getting him something we’re gonna pool our cash and get him something a bit nicer.

I would like to get him a nice knife. I gave him a decent knife for his birth day a few years ago, but with out combined cash we can go up a step. I set the pole for the 3 I’ve been thinking about that fall within our price range.

Dad is a cop of 22 years. He uses the knife on a regular basis but mostly for many of the same EDC tasks so many of us use our knives for every day. Ease of sharpening isn’t an issue since I live near by and can always run over and touch up the edge. Weight is an issue the 5 ounce mark is about all the heavier I’m willing to go. After all he hasn’t had to chop in to a steel door in 22 years I doubt he’ll have to do it in the few till retirement.

What do you guys think. If you choose other tell me what your thinking of and why.

I think a Paramilitary would make a fine Father's Day gift. It's the most useful of the knives you've posted, IMO. Not that there is anything wrong with the others, they're all good choices. The Paramilitary is a good size, and probably the least "threatening" of the knives on your list. And has the best lock.

I like 'em all, but I'm not too sure that a ZT 350 is useful for anything other than playing with and ogling. I agree with everything the poster above me wrote about the Para. Although I'd consider the standard S30V blade for ease of maintenance if you're gifting it. I just yesterday got an orange Military myself and it is already up for sale. It is beautiful and no doubt very useful as a great slicer, but it is simply too large for many people. I'll be keeping my Para if the Military sells. I think it would make the best choice for your dad also.

the 710 carries much smaller than the military or the 350 despite having a long blade. it is also tip down and the axis lock is better than a liner or frame lock imho since your fingers are out of the blade path as it closes. also, it can open and close with gravity but still be locked up perfectly solid with no blade play.

cant say any of them are bad choices.

I have six Millies, four of them carbon fiber, so I am going to recommend a...710. They are a class act that will never disappoint.

My dad really liked the 0350. Here in Oregon, we like beefy, solid knives :D

You can't go wrong with any of those choices though--they're all great knives.

I have never been a police officer, but I have a Spyderco Police and love it. It might be the one I would choose if I were you.

I have both the 710 and the Military, too, and while I prefer the Military, the 710 is probably a better all-around tool (prying) than the Military which is an outstanding slicer/cutter. It is about as light a knife as you can get in that size, though, which would be a consideration with all the gear an officer carries.

710 because it is the only one I have experience with and the experience has been all good.

Is the 350 really that strong? A couple of changes from the 300 really bugged me about it and ultimately discouraged me from buying it.

First was the change from frame to liner lock. Now Im not a liner lock hater, but to me a really "tough" folder would probably chose an integral lock becuase when you squeeze tightly you are keeping the lock engaged. Secondly, I wasnt sure about the pivot. It looks like a regular old pivot to me, certainly not the giant bolt that is the 350 or 200 pivot or the strider bull pivot. Additionally, I really wanted it to come in tiger stripe, although thats clearly not a big issue.

By all means, convince me otherwise, because Im still on the fence about it, I just dont buy things Im not 100% sure I want.

My vote went to the 710 (get satin finish). I try to EDC rotate a lot of my knives but an AXIS lock knife always seems to make its way into my pocket.

Thanks for your recommendations so far. I included the ZT, military and the 710 because those are three knives that I know he’s seen and have heard good things about. I don’t think he’s ever seen a para but I’m thinking about it for obvious reasons.

I have to say the 710. Your dad being a cop knows a good knife is needed, and one that can take a good amount of abuse. This seem to me like the perfect one. Large, yet slim, strong, yet sleek. Thats just the one I'd choose.

Looks like the 710 and the Para are neck and neck with the military a bit behind them with the ZT a distant 4th.

I have a Military, a paramilitary, and a 710. I had a ZT301 but sold it, so I have an idea of what the 350 would be like.

Of the 4, I'd pick the 710. It cuts well, carries the best, and is fun to open and close.

I opted for the Para.

Any reason why?

It helps to hear the reasons behind the choice. Any of the knives I listed as well as the ones added would make a good knife for dad but by hearing why you would choose X over Y is important in picking the one that I want not only to fit his needs best but also to give him the most enjoyment.
