Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to get my father a knife as a present, something a bit more modern than the Case that he has.

In talking with him, he says he would prefer:
  • a 2" to 3" blade (max)
  • stainless liners
  • a longish / thicker, non-slippery handle (he has biggish hands) that offers some grip
  • a Backlock / Lockback (he doesn't like a liner lock)
  • a pocket clip
  • "classy" look (but not smooth Carbon, it's too slippery)
  • A good steel (he washes his blades with dishsoap and water)
Thanks!

Sorry for the large pic, but I think this would be perfect for him. SK Blades exclusive 501. Its the right size, excellent blade steel, and classy looking. The Burlap Micarta is a bit slick, but I would imagine a bit of sand paper would change that.

Which Case does he currently carry?

How does he carry the Case currently and are you sure he wants pocket clip carry?

Some guys (I'm not one) really like smaller but fatter traditional pocket knives and may simply not take to modern pocket clip carry, despite the longer handles on most modern knives. I like big traditionals carried in my rear pocket and would awkwardly receive a modern knife or a smaller traditional pocket knife, as I know that neither fit my carry preference.

If you want to stay in a traditional looking knife with a pocket clip and thumb stud.

If you want to get a bit more modern looking but still with traditional roots and with more expensive steel, Buck is rolling out their new 112 (and larger 110) Slim Pros. S30V and micarta scales. No liners though.

Benchmade North Fork folder would be worth looking at. I think it fits your specifications and it maintains a fairly traditional look.

First knife that came to mind for me was also the Sypderco Native 5 ... a great knife fits your points well ... I think you can still find them in G10 with S35VN blades some places ... and if not there are varients to be had.

I picked up the Benchmade Mini Presidio II earlier this year. It has Benchmade's axis lock that is very function, safe, and easy to use. Take a look at it. Has about a 3" blade in S30V. It is totally a manual knife although you can use the thumb stud to open it one handed if you like. Very grippy.

My other suggestion would be the Spyderco Native 5.

if you want a classic look, with 3 inch max blade length, and a clip and thicker handle, the Buck Vantage Pro (small) fits... and, as a bonus it's quite inexpensive for s30v steel

Get him a Spyderco. But I'd have to say no on the S110V. People who aren't "in" to knives usually use the knife for what ever. My vote is Native 5, G10 or Lightweight.

The Buck Vantage is a very popular knife. But it's a liner lock and the OP specifically was looking for lock backs.

Also a good suggestion but a tad over three inches.
