Help me pick a knife for my father?

Thanks everyone!

So far the Spyderco Native 5 with the Fluted Carbon handle is looking the winner.

I would put the budget of around €200 to €225.

Given your criteria, I'd say the Spyderco Delica 4 would be almost perfect. Would be much cheaper too than some of the other suggestions.

A 2"-3" blade with a large handle is going to look somewhat strange. (Large frame knives usually being considered over 3 3/4" when folded.) The most common knives with that basic profile tend to be those designed for carving or agricultural uses (florists, pruners, etc.)

If you take a close look on Buck's website you will see that you can spec out a "custom" of one of their current production patterns for a very reasonable price. That's something I would seriously consider.

The perfect pocket knife:

Spyderco Chaparral Lightweight with CTS-XHP super steel. It is not very expensive, either.

This one is a bit bigger 3.5” but very slim and classy profile, for the looks of it this would be a great option. This is like the definition of a gentlemen’s knife.

I actually got this for my dad for Father’s Day last year and he loved it.

Some great ideas in this thread. OP, choose based on your experience and what you believe your father will like and appreciate as a thoughtful gift from you.... versus which knife gets the most "votes".

If a "gentleman's knife" would appeal to him, the Boker Urban Trapper is a pretty nice. But it is a liner lock flipper, not to mention about a 3.5 inch blade.

In talking with him, he says he would prefer:
  • a 2" to 3" blade (max)
  • stainless liners
  • a longish / thicker, non-slippery handle (he has biggish hands) that offers some grip
  • a Backlock / Lockback (he doesn't like a liner lock)
  • a pocket clip
  • "classy" look (but not smooth Carbon, it's too slippery)
  • A good steel (he washes his blades with dishsoap and water
Spyderco Baby Jess Horn.

2.6 inch blade, stainless liners, non slip G-10 handle and a easy to use backlock.

The pocket clip is great, I use mine for a money clip. Classy look, like all of Jess's stuff.

Steel is VG-10 like only Spyderco can do it... gets very sharp with very little effort.

One of the only Spyderco knives I've kept. He'll love it, or I'll buy it off you... one of the two. ;)
