I started collecting production folders for 4 years , from Coldsteel to Spyderco and GEC . Dont know why but recently I suddenly want a tanto folder (Before this I had never have intrest in or own tanto knives ).

Here is something it should match (from most to least important)

1, Blade lengh between 3.2' and 3.6' ,overall under 8.5' , has at least 4' handle for me to have a hammer grip .(With this many folders are removed, like CRKT M16/21 , Coldsteel Voyager/Recon)

2,Under 100$ and 6oz

3,Tanto point like M21 or Recons (double ground) is better than those like M16SF's (just two flat surface ,narrow width so not so easy to cut)

4,button lock , frame lock is prefered , linerlock with safety also accepted . Please no AXIS/ARC/normal lockback(like Almar or Spyderco)/thin Liner lock(at least 2mm thick pls).

5,IF possible pls no assisted or flipper(if it is a flipper at least has a thumb stud or disk).

6,Plain edge

What comes to mind could be Kershaw RJI , or something Gerber is going to release (but really refused to buy a Gerber)

Any opions are welcome !

:)

Maybe a little bigger but as you mentioned, why not a Cold Steel Recon1? Benchmade makes some Grips in tanto shapes too.

0700 fits almost everything but its sooo odd, not only the tanto style but also the handle..

Recon is really too large---I used to carry a Military or an Endura but not now.

I looked into EX03 (the affordable EX01:D) but it still beyond budget a lot .

Thank you guys ! More suggestion , more , please !:)

Pick up a ZT 0700. I am digging mine!

Happy for you !

So how is the ergonormic? As there are so many straight lines there it looks only like a showman but not confortable at all . But ofcourse I could be wrong .

idk about his but mine fits great in hand..... i also have large hands so that may make a difference, ergos are great as well

It is a rather odd looking knife but it actually fits in the hand very good. It reminds me of the Tilt handle and look at the reviews it gets for the handle ergos. If you bought one from say BladeHQ they will let you return it if you really just didn't like how it felt in hand.

Can I ask why this weird lock requirement? Even though I pretty much carry only titanium frame locks these days, I will never trust them as much as I trust the axis lock--I've seen knives with frame locks that can disengage via lock rock, even some expensive ones, I've never seen an axis lock knife disengage unexpectedly. Not only do I trust it more, it has the advantage of easier one handed operation with either hand than a frame lock.

If you weren't fixated on frame locks, it strikes me that you would have some Benchmade options that hit your other list of criteria well. For example, the 553 Griptilian has a 3.45" tanto blade, is 4.62" closed and 8.07" open, weighs 3.2oz and is right around your price range.

Emerson CQC7 will handle all you need. Comes in three standard sizes and numerous other options.

I have one, and you missed some of the other CQC7B feature highlights:

- Terrible fit and finish
- Useless chisel grind
- a street price above OP's stated limit

:fatigue:
I don't care for tantos myself but that is beside the point. The CQC7 can be found for the OP's budget, the chisel grind is far from useless, especially in a tanto blade and if your samples FF is lacking send it in. It is simply another option that had not been stated but thanks for your input. Good luck on your search OP.

If you were open to the Axis lock, the Benchmade Griptilian 553 is a great option... Feels great in hand, well made, fits the budget...
Got one back in January, and the more i got used to it, the more i like it...great knife for the price...

I dont pick AXIS beacause of the Omega spring .Also I like the Stryker most if they can release a AXIS or Button lock Mannual version Stryker I will buy it.

For CQC7, I really not dig chisel grind. And for 0400 , that is ,um , just not my cup of tea (that recurve on a tanto) .

Actually I looked into EX01/03 for a long time and considering if I should waiting for the EX04 3.5' Drop Version . It is so perfect and the tip seems to be strong enougn.

I would just get a 4" cs recon or voyager tanto unless law limits to the smaller size. Tri-Ad is ideal if you want to practice stabbing it into stuff or beat up in it in general. I have stabbed and back-cut (as brutal to a lock as it gets) into media many times with a vaquero voyager and its still like brand new. There is a video of Fred Perrin throwing mini lawman and ak-47 over and over again into wood at speed that is harder than most people stab - he said he had done it thousands of times with them and the knives are still solid.

I wouldn't worry as much about the omega springs as some other lock mechanisms all together if you see a Benchmade you want.

Er, what? I have no idea what this means. Is this is the "omega springs break all the time" junk? Because there are two in a knife, and it still works fine with one broken. I've used a bunch of axis knives for a long time without managing to break one, much less two at the same time. If one ever does finally manage to break I'd just replace it. Compared to the much more real problem of possible lock rock, I'm confused as to how anyone would think frame locks are superior to axis locks for safety.

Agree to disagree, I guess. Good luck with your search.
