Help me pick a traditional!

Er, the Bullnose is twice as much.

And, although not as bad my Bullnose arrived with unbalanced covers.

Again, it's not about price, but integrity. GEC is honest about what they're offering. Here's some quotes from their page introducing the Farm & Field line:
"inexpensive knives for day to day, hour to hour use."
"not looking for the shiny, natural handled work of art, but a tough, durable everyday, throw in the toolbox tool."
"It is our attempt to make a strictly user knife"
"less expensive materials, and far fewer labor operations."

I checked into sending the Case back. The cheapest I could ship it would be about $5. They said they would hand pick me a good one that doesn't have any of the issues I pointed out. Don't know if I should send it back or not! I mean, I bought it to be a cheap user, and if I keep dumping $ into it, it's going to turn out not so cheap.

I guess I've got to decide to live with it or send it back. I've got 14 days to make up my mind. My fear is that if I keep it, every time I use it and feel that spring sticking up it will bug me a little more every time until I sell it.... If I had one without the problems I'd probably keep it forever.

Ahhhhh, crud. I think I just talked myself into sending it back....

I'd send it in. If it bothers you now it's going to bother you a year from now. $5 is a small price to pay to get something you'll be happy with, especially a knife that'll probably last as long as you care to keep it around.

Amen. I agree completely, and I'm taking your advice. Thanks!

I'll shoot some pics of the hand picked specimen when it gets here. I'm not at all expecting perfection, but acceptable would be nice!

Well, ol Soddy is on his way back to the seller. He told me he would hand pick a replacement for me, so I'm hoping for the best. I'm sure it will at least be better than the first one I received...

I just knew it would indeed bug me, and continue to do so like Cory said. I just had to send it back. It really IS worth it because I'll probably carry the replacement, whereas I would have traded the original one off.

I'll post pics of the replacement blade when it gets here.

You definitely made the right choice. When Case gets it right they are great knives. The sodbuster is too good of a pattern to have your first one be a dud that puts you off to them altogether.

Thanks Cory, and thanks for the advice. The part that really opened my eyes was when you said if it bugs be now, it would bug me a year from now. It really was worth it to me to send it back for a replacement that I will most likely carry for years, instead of hanging on to something that ticks me off for a couple months and trading it off.... Even if it IS a cheaper knife. I'm sure Case can do better. We shall see.....

Going to go outside the box a little here, let me stress that I have huge hands.... size 16 wedding band, this knife fits my hand perfectly is a beautiful knife, I don't think I could ask for anything more from a EDC knife, but it is certainly worth a look, GEC #48 improved trapper (mine is in African Blackwood but there are several handle choices) http://www.collectorknives.net/great-eastern-cutlery-northfield-african-blackwood-improved-trapper/

Not my Photo

That one is on my radar for sure! Thanks!

Very nice! Thanks so much for the pictures. I loooove that stag. So pretty!

If you were to recommend one of these over the others, which one would it be?

Thanks! The #42 Trapper... just the right size

I got the "replacement hand picked" sodbuster in the mail today. It's WORSE than the first one. It's got all the same issues the first one had (only worse, if you can believe that), plus a butter knife tip. It's obvious they just grabbed another one off the shelf and sent it. I told them exactly what I was looking for in a replacement, and they blew it.

I think they may be selling seconds at full price. Whatever the case may be, it's obvious they don't stand by their word.

I think I may have been just expecting too much out of this knife. I'm just going to keep it. I've got to fix that tip though!

I think next I may try out one of those Bullbusters, or a Queen Country Cousin.

They cost a little more, but then I should be able to expect better fitted parts.

I think I'm going to ask for a nice GEC for Christmas. But I may wind up just buying one if one just grabs me!

I'm sorry to hear that you got another dud. I think I'm pretty much at the point where I'm done with Case unless I can hold the knife and inspect it before purchase. I've gotten lucky, but there are too many stories the other way for me to push my luck. My yellow sodbuster jr. is on par with my GECs as far as fit and finish. Just luck of the draw I guess. If you could shoot me an email, I'd be interested to hear who you ordered through.

Yes sir, will do. I have a few errands to run, but when I get back I will shoot you an email.

I will follow your lead on Case knives in the future. It sure would have helped if I could have held the knife and looked at it first!
