Help me pick my first $200 knife...

Whoa! I knew Gander Mountain had 'em, but they were $250. Mschwoeb, how does the price match work? I have seen new Buck Mayo's for $165 to $185.

I took in a Shepard Hills catalog and they matched that, but they also had said you could bring in a printout from a website, say such as 1SKS showing the knife. They should then discount the knife for you.

PWork has a Small Classic Sebenza listed for sale right now, at not very much more than your target price.

I saw that he has posted in Pworks thread,Great deal on the Sebenza.I have my sm Sebie in my pocket right now, thanks Danbo.I really didn't think I would like it as much as I do.It has became my favorite EDC.

Are you looking for mainly a nice carry piece you can use, something tactical, a wall hanger or...?

I just bought an old Spyderco Terzuola collab as a collector piece under $200, a mini AFCK 184 for a tactical for under $100 (but Im gonna put some bells and whistles that should bring up the overall price). I really like the Benchmade 921 switchback as an everyday, it's elegant but has tactical potential and yes, the Axis lock is a nice thing (even though I personally think people make too much of it).

I like this knife way more than I thought I would, considering I almost always go thumb hole, G-10, and shiny blade and the one I bought is the complete opposite. Newgraham.com should still have some of the limited editions of this one, I bought the grey w/black blade. There's also the all black Taurus version or the very nice olive version at AG Russell, something for everyone. I even use the little blade occasionally even though noone else seems to find it that necessary :)

Another nice buy I was looking at is the Ken Onion whisper in titanium with rubber inserts and vault lock. They're going for under $200 on ebay which seems to be a major price drop.

Personally, I'd never spend that much on a folder. Get a Benchmade Gryptillion and live happily ever after.

Update: I went to Gander Mountain and the elderly fellow behind the knife counter said they won't compete with internet prices. Mschwoeb, do you have any input on this? He stated that they would only price match local prices. Anyways, no biggie.

Talos, my original post asked for help on buying a $200 knife, not a $50. The Benchmade Griptillian is an awesome knife. I owned a 420 version and a D2. Great knife for the money. I sold a bunch of my lower end knives and now I want to purchase a more expensive one, because that would make me live happily ever after :D

What, nobody likes the William Henry T12 in carbon fiber? Awesome knife for the money. Great looks, excellent fit and finish and it is a good cutter. It is also super lightweight. Perfect for everyday carry if you daily routine doesn't call for a super stout folder as it is more of a gentleman's pocket knife. Lockup is great, but hard use can cause some flex.

On a side note, $200 would get you awful close to BOTH a MT mini SOCOM Elite and the basic model William Henry Spectrum that they ar clearing out.

I understood your post very well, just expressing an opinion. I would be afraid to carry or put through hard use such an expensive knife for fear of losing or damaging it. That being said I can understand the pleasure that can come from owning something that is superbly made. Hope you find what you are looking for. When you do post some pictures.

I have decided to sell some of my unused knives and I now have around
two hundered bucks to spend. Since I am not able to spend this much on a knife all the time, I need some help. I am leaning towards a Buck Mayo. Maybe a Spyderco ATR. Basically, I want a production folder with great steal and all of the bells and whistles. Frame lock, titanium, s30v, yadda yadda. Besides the two listed, what other ones out there would you want if you had this money to spend. I know some would recommend Chris Reeves, but lets only play with two hundred or less. Thanks.

Mike, I have a AG Russel FeatherLite ATS34 folder that is a great all purpose knife. Best of all it fits nicely into my pocket without wearing a hole and looks inconspicuous. Best $50 bucks I have spent for a folder.

C'mon guys, you're killing me. Sure a Griptillian is a great knife. So are a lot of the $50.00 knives available. What the guy wants is something nicer. Surely $200.00 is not pocket change and is a considerable purchase for many, especially for something that is a personal extravagance like a pocket knife, but it's what he wants to do with his money.

Broaden your horizons. Dare to dream about a world where a $200.00 purchase won't kill you. A Grippy is great and might even cut as well as a Buck Mayo (but i doubt it) or a Microtech, but when you use it, it doesn't feel the same in your hand. I mean, the Buck 172 is Titanium and S30V! It's the epitome of cool. The griptilian is a cool knife but there's no Ti or S30V. Microtech might not have either, but to handle one of their knives will justify the price difference. The handles are only aluminum and the blades only 154CM, but the precision with which they are built is amazing, certainly a step above a Griptillian, especially a 420 version.

Bargain knives are cool. I really like my $20.00 Kershaw Vapor, but there's more to life.

Open your minds. Give the higher end stuff a try. It's a lot of fun.

Out of the Mayo, Skirmish, and the ATR I would without hesitation pick the ATR. I have used and handled all of them, the ATR fits my needs the best, and is the only one that is tip up carry. The Mayo is a great slicer but I was concerned about tip breakage with it. The Skirmish is just to large to EDC and not get the sheeple looking. The ATR is a nice compromise between them, at least in my opinion.

I love my Spydies. The next nice folder I get may be a benchmade. HAve you thought about a custom knife? There are some cool knives on this website made by little people like myself. Check out the for sale by knifemakers. After my first custom I really dont look at many production knives. Now I tend to look at custom makers more...

Very profound, jmxcpter. I'm with you. Buying a $200.00 pocket knife is a life changing experience. And I never feel cooler than when I'm strolling through the mall talking on my hands free cell phone and cleaning my fingernails with my $200.00 pocket knife.

Anyway, Sticknrun, here's a knife that might fit the bill for you. I think it's a beauty.

If I wasn't so busy throwing money at my Jeep I would buy one myself.

How about a Benchmade 960 Osborne? That is one excellent folder.
Have you even taken a look at this one?..If I had the "extra" money, I'd buy one.

Thanks for all of the replys. As luck would have it, I now have enough money for a small sebenza. I am just waiting on the right one to go up for sale that I like. I will keep everyone posted on which one I get. Thanks.

Mike
