Help me pick out a Fixed Blade

I have quite a few folders but I think it's time I got myself a fixed blade for camping/hiking/etc.

I think I would prefer something with at least a 5" blade, full tang, it has to be strong.

I'm thinking an all around survival knife, bushcraft, batoning, cutting up firewood/kindling.

I really like the looks of the Ka-bar Warthog but it doesn't have a full tang so I'm not sure it could handle much abuse.

But now the real challenge, I'd like to do this on the cheap, preferably around $50.

Thanks in advance.

For $50, a Cold Steel SRK, or $20-$30, a Cold steel Bushman would work.

if you can find one, get a becker campanion. For a little more than 50 it is a tank.

We all have to learn on our own, and it is fun, but we ultimately lose money on our purchases in the long run. Take a look at the custom fixed blades in the makers forum. Also, take a look at Bark River.

Fallkniven problay has some of the best fixed blades you can buy. I have F1 for allround use and it has not failed me once. The S1 is good fixed blade for survival. I think it is 5 inches in lenght.

The Buck 119 is a inexpensive all around camp knife. The Bushmans by Cold Steel are also good. Knivesplus.com has a lot of good sales.

The Kabar Warhog is plenty stuff for what you want to do with it. The Short Kabar would be a good choice. Dont overlook the Mora 2000. At 30.00 its a lot of knife. May I suggest that you add a light hatchet or Hawk to your gear as they are made for chopping. I have a light weight cheap hatchet that will outchop about any knife made. Without any damage to the tool. Keep your knife for cutting and defense. JMO.

Buck Nighthawk for about $40-$50. It doesn't technically have a full tang, but it does have a full LENGTH tang. It's one of the toughest knives out there in its price range. If you don't mind spending a tad bit more, the Ontario RAT 5 or RAT 7 are good choices. The Nighthawk comes in 420HC stainless with a top notch heat treat. The RAT 5 comes in 1095 carbon and the RAT 7 comes in your choice of 1095 carbon or D2 tool steel.

I forgot about the nighthawk. Wal-mart has them for $40, part-serrated. Don't know if that's what your looking for, but they make them in a plain edge too. A guy was offering one in the trade forums last week. It may still be there. Good recommendation Gunfucius. I used to have one. They're a 1/4" thick and take a hell of a beating. I thought about getting another. I have been using tantos on the outdoors and have found them very useful.

A got a Becker Crewman a few years ago thinking that a tough, survival-type knife would handle everything. It is a great knife, but the fact is I almost never use it because it is so heavy and overkill for my purposes.

I love Bark River and would encourage you to consider them. You'll be doubling or tripling your budget, though. However, it's worth it!
