My regular boss is out on bonding leave for the next three months, so someone from another department is filling in. Everyone I work with in my department has received a knife from me, so I'd like to get him one too. I don't know him all that well, but I do know that he likes really nice, leather shoes and high-end, american whisky. When I asked him what kind of knife he would be interested in he said "Something with a little flash, but not too much. Maybe something that would be useful if, God forbid, it was needed walking to my car in the parking lot." Lol, not a whole lot to go on.

He's a big guy, so I was thinking something in the 3" - 3.5" range. I'd like to keep it in the $50 - $75 range, as that's what I spent on most of the others... But he showed more excitement than just about anyone else I've done this for, so upping the price to $100ish isn't out of the question. We work on a sales floor, but cut a lot of cardboard/zip ties/poly wrapped pallets. So it can't be too scary, but has to be very functional. I'd like to avoid 7cr, 8cr, and 9cr.

In the $50 - $75 range, nothing is really standing out to me except for maybe the Civivi Elementum Button Lock or maybe the Civivi Riffle. This is the price range I'm most interested in hearing from you about since the options really open up a lot more in the $100 range.

In the higher price range, I've been looking at the Civivi Pintail in Damascus and Cuibourtia wood. That really kind of seems right up his alley. As well as some of the more usual suspects like the Para 3 LW, Kershaw Bareknuckle, and Kershaw Blur.

I'd also like to avoid purchasing anything I've already purchased for someone else in the department; Buck Vantage Pro, Kershaw Knockout S35VN, Civivi Elementum, Massdrop Gent, Kerhshaw Leek Blackwash, Spyderco Native 5 LW, Spyderco Dragonfly, LE Opinel (for a collector), Gerber Fastball, Spyderco Delica.

Thanks!

A Rat 1 variant.

I keep a few Rat 1 and Rat 2's in my locker to give to people outside of the department who ask to use my knife (like that is going to happen). I'm looking for a bit more flash than that this time though.

spyderco centofante or rock jumper

I have a Rock Jumper on hand, and as actually giving that some thought. I'm not very familiar with the Centofante, but after looking at it, that's definitely up in the running too. I'm not a fan of pinned knives, but it shouldn't matter to him at all.

Perhaps an Endura 4 variant or Para 3 LW? Practically any Spydie actually makes for a great gift.

Any of the Tenacious, Efficient, Resilience etc. knives are also good to go for me, though the steels may be underwhelming compared to similarly priced competitors.

How about artisan arion? Coming out in Ar-RPM9 at whitemountain for $85 but a little 3.5"

There are a number of cold steel options from $50 to $77. Voyagers, 4max scout, air lite, counter point, etc.

I think you're on the right track, it's hard to beat Civivi, bestech, etc for quality vs money under 1 Benjamin.

If you can wait a little, the Civivi Cogent is looking pretty bomb.

The Artisan/CJRB Scoria is pretty nice too. Cazador is kind of niche but the hawksbill-ish blade is great for straps and cardboard. I have a Swaggs Swayback as well and it's actually got a pretty thicc handle, that knife excels at cardboard, mail, straps, etc.

Good luck!

I would wait to see how he feels about knives at the office. You could end up facing discipline for bringing weapons into the workplace.

Alternatively, if he gets a gift of something he really likes, it could have a positive effect on policy ;)
