So I'm going to spare you guys on how I lost my folder the other day. Just know it involves me forgetting it was in my pocket and attempting to get on a plane (bad unintentional idea). So...I need a new every day carry knife.

I was hoping I could get some suggestions before making the purchase simply because I don't want to go overboard and buy 3-4 decent knives that I just "like". <--- trust me I have plently of those, and they are all in my box o' knives as my wife calls it.

So, if you guys are up for helping suggest my new pocket companion, here is the criteria.

Needs...

- < $200
- pocket clip
- small and lightweight
- one hand opening
- sturdy (will use for light work purposes)

Preferably...

- made in the USA
- assisted opening (or fast release)
- not a liner lock
- partially-serrated

I hope I'm not being too picky, I just want to find a great knife that will suit my needs for a while.

For most of your requirements the Spyderco Caly3 with ZDP steel and carbon fibre handles should be just what you're looking for. Despite being compact and light it is a really sturdy workhorse with a super steel. It doesn't have assisted opening but we all know that the spyderco hole works really quick. It's a backlock. I have the cheaper VG10 model and it's awesome, and nearly all owners will agree.
Caveats for you: It's (superbly) made in Japan, and so are the most dependable cars. And I don't know if it is available as partially serrated.

benchmade 551
benchmade mini griptilian
emerson mini cqc7
blackhawk blades bh30 assisted
spyderco delica
benchmade apparition with g10 handle

It almost seems too obvious but, what about a Leek/Random Leek?

Meets every single one of your requirements, and at under half of the budget.

Buy my Shallot 110v from me! Lots of nice knives fall into your category, EKI's, BM's, Spydies, AG Russell frame lock(made in Italy).etc.etc. keepem sharp

Once again, the Spyderco Caly III is the first knife mentioned. I can't tell you how many times I've read a similar thread and the Spyderco Caly II is always one of the first knives mentioned. I even find myself suggesting it and I've never even seen one except in pics.

I got to get me a Caly III.:D:thumbup:

+1 for the Mini-Griptilian. Of course you'll have to buy 3 or 4 to get to $200!

thanks for all of the great suggestions. I will probably snag a caly3 due to the fact that this will be my first spyderco as well as my first g10 handle. I might even go with the plain edge.

While I have you all here, what are your opinions on the Smith and Wesson Viper?

Just bought my christmas present.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'm sure I'll love it

looks like a nice knife, though i cant stand knives with aluminum handles myself, i dont like grabbing a cold handle all the time

the blackhawk b30 is an excellent assisted opener, made in usa, zytel handles make it very light ..... one of my favorites

you know, im not really too fond of the zytel. I don't really like the plastic feel, despite how strong and lightweight it is. Don't get me wrong, I have a Cold Steel Ti-Lite with Zytel that I absolutely love, I just prefer the metal. I don't mind the cold handle :)
