Help me pick the perfect backpacking knife

How about the Benchmade 580 or 585? It's an assisted folder and acts like a fixed blade when was opened and locked.

Noob question - was does AK stand for? Everyone keeps talking about it and I'm lost.

Personally i think aa knives are totally useless. You want one with a lock...that kinda takes the quickness factor out eh? Seems very stupid to me. Ive had one and fond it totally useless and unsafe. IMO they are just for mall ninjas not for knife users but im a jerk sometimes:)

Mall Ninjas - that is seriously funny stuff.

The more I read here and the more I think about it, I realize the open assist thing is more of a novelty than a useful feature. I'm backing off that one as I realize how easy some of these knives are to open and use. Thalestin's point was the one that finally hit home - having to disengage a safety lock "kinda takes the quickness factor out eh?"

guaps- unless I am mistaken I believe you mean "what does SAK stand for?" Swiss Army Knife. Don't acronyms just piss you off sometimes especially when it's something you already know? If you truly meant AK, the only one I know of is Automativ Kalashnikov

Same here, the BM FB Grip is light, yet full sized and a great backpack knife. Along with the SAK it's a great combo for the trails and in sheeple company:thumbup:

Carry both., Here's the lightest fixed/folder combo I carry for backpacking - modded BM Fixed Grip (4.6 oz) and SAK Farmer - redundant, functional and light:
