Help me think of a few options around $50 for a fixed blade

I'm with the suggestion for the Condor Kephart or the Green River Hunter. But the Buck Mesa would be a good choice too.
 
I bought this Condor Bushlore for the purposes you describe. It is <$50. It does not meet your requirements exactly, its blade is 4.3" but I'm very happy with it. It has a leather sheath but OH what a leather sheath it is. It will cause admirers to think you have a real expensive knife on your belt. I call it overkill on a price point knife. So far the knife has been holding an edge reasonably well.

I was really surprised by Schrade's 1095 steel fixed blades. For under 30 dollars, fantastic for the price!!!

Ontario makes great blades as well!
