Help me to choose: 4.1 vs 5.1

I wear Carhartt overalls sometimes. I've had one pair almost ten years. They're my comfy cloths.(I've had to dig them out of the salvation give away bag every year I been with the wife. She keeps trying to get rid of them.) I've never worn out one of their jackets as long as I've worn them. Still have one from when I was a teenager. It's my farm coat. Their stuff is worth the extra dough.

Here are a few photos with sizing. The top pic is, from the top down, a 7/7, 5.1, a 4.1 and a Spyderco Paramilitary 2

Again I think you'll LOVE both knives.

Ha ha! My wife just shakes her head at my fashion sense. :) I agree, it's definitely worth the extra change.

Alfadriver, the 5.1s are going to be available before the 4.1's. Grab a 5.1 and by the time the 4.1's hit, you'll know. And you can move a 5.1 on the exchange any time you're ready to let it go, if it's not for you. But I think everyone needs at least one 5.1 :)

Thanks guys for the all the suggestions! The time factor also plays a role... 5.1 and 4.7 seem to be available much sooner than 4.1. Currently I leaning more towards the 4.7...

My wife has the same view on my fashion :) Wearing either Woolrich or 5.11 pants most of the time, even to the office :) I like Woolrich better, but they are hard to get in my country and not many US sellers are shipping to Europe.

Next on the must-have list is most probably a 7/7.

There is not much that I can add here that has not already been addressed except for my opinion. Since you EDC a folder, you have a tool to cover fine detail work. Hence I would choose the 5.1. It really excels at wood prep compared to the 4.1. I have owned multiples of each, and plan to own more of the new designs. If I had a folder in my pocket, I would want a 4.7 or 5.1 (or larger) on my belt or pack.

Heck, get all three. That's what I did. The 4.1, 4.7, and 5.1. Any that you don't like I would bet you can unload on the bboards here for minimal loss, if any. Unfortunately, beyond that, I'm no help, as I haven't received any of them yet.

All very great advice here. The folks in this subforum have always been warm and caring people with great advice! I don't own any Survive! knives yet as I am still awaiting my orders to arrive but I do have knife in a similar size and built to the 5.1 so here's my take.

All Survive! knives are built tough and built strong. There really is nothing they cannot do. However, with a smaller knife like the 4.1 you will need to put in more effort to get bigger chores done. For example, you can't chop wood with a 4.1 because it does not have the mass to do it, but you can beaver cut through it. It just takes longer than straight chopping through.

That said, if you are going to own only one, make it the 5.1. It is probably the most balanced knife designed with enough heft to do some light chopping if need be, enough length to do some light batoning, and not too heavy to do some finer camp craft works.

I have a feeling that after you own the 5.1 you may be wanting to add the 4.1 into your collection. From what I see, Survive! knives are just that addictive.
