I am not a hater, noram I an advocate4 for Magnicut or any other steel.

I am agnostic, that is, I want to be convinced or educated.

I understand that Magnicut is a "balanced" formulation in terms of corrosion resistance, toughness and edge retention.

But just where does it lie on the scale? Is it pretty poor at ech of these things or is it superior in performance in ech of these categories?

Is the machineability acceptsbl for the home-shop maker? Is the4 heat tret regimine complex or requiring overly specialized equipment?

Can I exdpect a good knife made with magnicut from most kn ifemakers?

As I wrote above: I am looking for education . . .be gentle.

Let's start with the basics and work from there.

It's pretty darn good in each of those categories........ Superior in all 3??? No..... But possibly better at all three areas as a whole, then other steel, depending on what you What....

From what i see, it grinds nice, sharpens great..... should be good to go.

This part IS more complicated than other steels.... It's new, people are tweaking their methods..... You NEED Cryo/LG

No..... well, maybe "good"

It's a Great steel.... Most people LOVE it.
But it's not the end all be all of steels. It's not meant to be.
Other steels are better in certain applications.
What makes this one so good is that it's Actually stainless (IF that is important to you?)
It holds a great edge (other steels hold a better edge)
and it's tough (other steels are Tougher)

But it's all three of those properties...... being that good in all three at the same time is hard to do
Cruwear is another contender for being equally Awesome, but in subtle, different ways.
Some say 4V is too......

You have options...... What do You want?

*edit..... I'm Trying to help.

Don't tempt fate. It may come out "Help Me Undertake Manicotti"

All kidding aside, there is a lot of info here on the forums about the pros and occasional hiccups with MagnaCut.

The "search" button will provide many instances...and you can select which areas to search as well...

If you go to this page from Larrin, and scroll down the page, there are some charts which compare various carbon, tool and stainless steels in terms of their toughness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance.

I think you'll find it quite informative and it will help you see how MagnaCut compares to other steels in each of those categories.

I think MagnaCut can be a great knife steel. One of my concerns, is that you would need a manufacturer that has extensive experience with steels to get the best out of it.
So I wouldn't want a 'lesser' knife making company's offering in a super steel, where I couldn't be sure that the heat treat and geometries were well matched.
I'd be concerned that 'well, it's MagnaCut' and not be getting my monies worth.
And I'm not sure about it taking a blade coating well.

A magnacut Randall would just about be the perfect fighting knife.
