Help me w/ a decision on a drop point?

I was just thinking that maybe the S30V steel in the gerber folder would maybe be better than D2 steel in the Benchmade. No?

This is my first posting. I find this an interesting thread in that I own most of the knives referenced. BM 151 in 154cm, BM 190 in D2, Gerber fixed Freeman in S30v, Gerber Caper in S30V, and a couple of Knives of Alaska in D2. After reading about "chipping" in S30V, I took my Gerber Freeman weekend and cut up a ton of card board boxes. No chipping, resharpened (with diamonds) quickly. As an old dear/elk hunter I agree. Folders get dirty and you needed a guard. I did carry a 1965 110 for years. Cut up deer nicely. I like the BM 190 in D2 the best, but I think all of them are great. I also own three gerber gaters in 154cm/ATS 34. I am new to the knife internet world. What is wrong with Gerber knives? All of mine seem fine for what I paid for them?

Ron-

Welcome to the party! Did you bring the beer?

Gerber has been criticized for stealing designs from other makers. I don't have any problems with my Gator folders. I think almost any knife design must have a close copy if you go back in knife history. I'm with you on blade guards on fixed knives.

I'd LIKE to be able to have a good folder that I can also use for dressing deer. If the Gerber S30V is able to get a good enough edge and retain it, I might go with the Gerber folder since it would be easier to carry around than a fixed blade. If you really like the Benchmade Hunter fixed blade that much more than the Gerber blade, I will probably pass on the Gerber S30V (but may still pick up a standard blade (440) Gerber Freeman for everyday pocket carry). I really like the look and design of the Gerber Freeman folders. I really like a big belly on my drop point blades.

Your input would be appreciated. Thanks

Walt Campbell.
He has killed and cleaned more game and big fish than any other knife builder on the internet has ever seen.
Period.
He lives in Alaska in the summer and Idaho in the winter.

They just flat out work.
He started building his own because the big names were sub-par.. in the real ( his) world.
He is a TRUE woodsman and his product is fabulous.

All of the other guys ? Lets see photos of the capes and skins YOU have done.

Look at the hands on that ole boy !

nickE10mm,
If you want a folder, the Gerger S30V would be much better than their standard steel knife. Consider the Cabelas Buck 110 in S30V. I have bought two of those at $59.95 for gifts. They are really!! sharp and very high finish quality.
