So I have never been one to have a safe queen or even baby my knives. You could even say I borderline about them sometimes (punch topping beers with my pm2, which is a little less pointy now). So here is my dilemma; my girlfriend gave me a Lil Matriarch for Christmas, the PE BBS one. & for some reason I can't bring myself to use it. I think the reservations may have sometime to do with it being my first sprint run spyderco (if you can call it that). I love the thing & I know it will excel as a work knife. What can I do to make sure I don't turn it into a safe queen? Has this ever happened to any of y'all?

There are knives in my collection I don't want to use, I'd rather keep them pristine for one reason or another. There are others I don't mind using to it's last leg :D

Its just personal preference. If you have reservations on using it; wait. Its a lot easier to use an unused knife than it is to unuse used knives!

That is very true. Thanks for the very solid advice.

I completely agree with Raz94. I use all my knives because I have to be able to talk about using them and how they perform. Before I sold knives for a living I had a good number of safe queens. To feel better about keeping them safe I would carry them to places they would stay safe, like Church, Weddings and small dressy gatherings.

Once I started my business I decided I had to start carrying and using my knives everyday. I already had a user small sebenza. I decided I needed to carry a Sebenza 25. I knew I would not want to use it, so the only way to make sure I would, was to take it straight out of the box and just immediately start using it. It worked for that knife and that is what I have done with every knife I have owned since. I think if I keep it safe for even one hour I would not be able to put it to work. Some of the most difficult ones were my Fiddleback Forge Bishop, First Hinderer, Hinderer MP-1, Inkosi and ZT0801 Copperhead. My Fiddleback Forge Bishop was so stunning out of the box. I stared and drooled over its beauty for a solid 5 minutes. Then I took it to our war room and batoned throud 5 2x4s. After that it was easy to use:D

I hope you decide to use it but will certainly lose no respect for keeping it safe. Hope you make a decision soon and have no regrets!

You've convinced me. I'm a take it out & baton some 2x4s, then I won't have any more reservations about keeping it safe.

The only way to truly build a deep connection with a knife is to use it. Either way use it. Even just for a little while, then hang it up if you feel the need.

Yeah I'm deff going to use it. Y'all are right. I was having more trouble with my apprehension to use the knife then actually not wanting to use the knife. If that makes sense.

Rip the bandaid off man. Find a big task and have at it. It's an FRN Spyderco. It's meant to be used and I'm sure your GF wanted you to use and enjoy it.

It can be difficult to use a knife when you first get it in pristine condition. It was really difficult for me to start using my crk but now its my favorite edc and I don't baby it. Once you start you'll be asking why you didn't start a lot sooner. use it, use it, use it :D

Looking better with some wear in the "high spots" as well :D

Probably not the direction you should go with this one:eek:

I have always had this problem with new knives and guns. I try to buy used when I can. If it has been used, I can do whatever I want with it. If it is new, I want to baby it. I sold off a lot of my collection a few years ago when Benchmade and Spyderco started making improved sprint runs. I recently got back into the knife collecting hobby and I found myself buying 2 of each knife if I can't find it used. One to keep as a safe queen, and one to use.

I don't do safe queens either OP. I buy knives to use. Not going to use it, I don't buy it.

But... I have an immaculate NIB Sage 4, absolutely flawless example. For some reason I can't bear the thought of putting a scratch on it, perhaps partly 'cos I can't get another. So I just haven't used it. Weird maybe, but that's how I feel about that particular knife.

With about 30 folders in the drawer I'm not short of users, so maybe the Sage 4 will stay an exception to the rule.

Buy more knives you know you will use. A new model, (or a new pointy pm2 in a different color, lol), but whatever the choice, more stock means you can easily walk the fine line of using it, sometimes, but not all the time as you rotate through the others.

Win/win; not a safe queen as it is in rotation, but still ease the apprehension of (over) using it as you justify carrying multiple others as well.
*(win - you have more knives!)

Raz94, you're Girlfriend got you an awesome present, so you have to use it! Think about this also, you have a knife from one of the most upstanding companies in the universe, they will do you right if something were to go wrong with the knife down the line, and if you don't think you'll be good at sharpening it just let Spyderco do it for you.

Use it in good health man!

I've decided I will be carrying and using it, with some sort of backup, till I see how much the reverse s can be used in most applications.

Sage 4 ....... Absolutely Gorgeous! I hear ya on that one dude, I use ALL my knives...but, I admit, that one would be hard to scratch up! What a beauty! I've been watching the exchange for a while to find one........hopefully someday! :D

To the OP, I understand your situation. I have some Sprint runs and discontinued knives that I had a harder time bringing myself to use at first. Simply because I may not be able to replace them if lost. But in the end, I just enjoy using them too much! And to be completely honest, I really prefer the look of a well used blade! I'd say use it! With that said, it's yours, so do with it as you please. Just enjoy it!

Edit to add: Haha, I guess I missed your last post Raz. I see your mind has already been made up, good call dude! I'm sure you'll be glad you used it!

I used to have a few safe queens, both guns and knives. But one day at at auction where I watched someones firearm and knife collection get split up and sold off it hit me. This guy spent all this time collecting stuff, and while I am sure he got some enjoyment out of having those items, he probably would have had more fun using them. Plus I know the items I value from my grandfather and father I value because they used and carried them, and they are priceless to me, if they were safe queens, I don't know if I would feel the same way.

Do it, it's a tough MOFO and excellent shape to discover and try out.

It's a working blade, if you're afraid of putting the first scratch on it lend it for a week to your GF and let her use it, then have it back a bit dulled and worked-out and you'll see how nice of a folder it is, and how excellently it performs

Also very easy to carry, lend itself to be in the pocket at all times

be it urban EDC or nature/outdoors companion
