My Kershaw Talon II, Model 1425 - favorite EDC of all time - part of my very anatomy it seemed - was stolen about a month ago - taken from my work-station by one of a small group of people. Sadly our security camera doesn't quite pick up the area. I keep hoping I have just misplaced it, and scour the same places over and over. But I know where it was, and in my heart I know someone swiped it.... curse them!

Yet there is a silver (and G10) lining. I have another one. New in box - purchased against just such an occurance - when I discovered that I couldn't bear the thought of not having my Talon and learning that they were discontinued. The second Talon and the story of its acquisition is an epic within itself, but to keep it short, I wish now I had bought ten of them when I had the chance. Such is my love of this knife.

But here is where I have totally lost the plot: I cannot bring myself to take my spare out of its box. If I lose that one, there is no more. None on any shelf in any shop in any country that I can find. And no alternative that does it for me... no Spyderco, no Benchmade, no anything that has the simple modified hawkbill line and subtle carry profile of the Talon. The knife means that much to me that I am terrified of even the potential of loss... I've become a fool.

But..

I know in secret where I can buy a ZT Black Talon... similar, just a fraction larger and stronger than the Kershaw version. I know it wont be the same though. I don't want a bigger knife. And it's $200USD. For $300 I could buy the only other knife that really appeals to me... a Benchmade 765.... totally different tangent there....

So help me out. Am I alone in this ridiculous mental struggle? Should I just take the new knife out of its box and get over it? Should I buy the ZT? Or should I save a bit more, get the 765 and have that as the treasure-piece...? Argggghhhhhhhh...

I say go with the ZT Talon. It's slightly larger than the Kershaw Talon and better steel. Same SpeedSafe Assisted Opening and blade shape. If you do get the ZT Talon you'll soon have another dilemma! Which one not to use! :)

How about buying one of the original Talons ( 1420 or 1420ST) ATS34 blade, Titanium frame.

Consider yourself lucky. Use this as a chance to explore all the great products offered to knife nuts. You can keep your favorite EDC in the box for now. Go out and pick up something fun!

BTW, I too, have a favorite that is still in the box and don't want to use it.

You'd be surprised what you can find on ebay. Your knife isn't the last one you can ever find, there's always going to be a couple on the internet somewhere. If you keep it in the box and dont use it, you might as well have already lost it!

By the way, what is it you like about the talon? I've never looked at that design before.

A little story-

At a job I had long ago a friend of mine had a pocket knife stolen from his locker (no lock). He put up a flyer saying "Lost Pocket Knife. $20 Reward". And he told everyone that he lost his knife and was hoping someone would find it (he knew it had been stolen, but he didn't tell people that). His thinking was that perhaps the thief would rather have the $20, because after all, we were all poor and making minimum wage.

A few days later another employee stepped forward and said he found the knife, returned it to my friend, and he collected the $20 reward. We knew he was a thief, but my friend pretended to be very grateful, and he was happy to get his knife back.

+1 on that
In a box, sitting alone and unused, it is no fun at all. Just carry it around, enjoy it, life's short so you'd better start cutting things with it whilce you can!
And if one day it gets lost, misplaced or broken, you'll always be able to find one somewhere around the net...and if you really like that one and enjoyed it all this time EDCing it, you'll gladly pay what they ask you for it!

C..NZ, you're not alone. I could tell your same story substituting 'broken' for stolen.

My MIB knife, I just couldn't. Turns out I was as attached to the mint knife being mint as I was to having my EDC on me all the time.

In the months that it took to get the broken knife fixed I tried, and failed, to get another one to carry. I also spent more than the original price of the knife on the repair. So yeah, I'm also a fool.

In the end, I was so happy to get my knife back that the above did not matter.

My name is Fisher and the Fisher space porn is dear to the hearts of my family. I've lost so many! Three only one I don't carry is the one my mother gave met upon graduating college. I couldn't live with that loss. But I still need to write! Do I but all sorts of small pens and enjoy them until they disappear.
So I sorry of agree that your knife in a box is a waste I also have a special thing in a box. Both of ours are irreplaceable.
I find my taste in knifes never stops changing. I bought a cheap Kershaw tanto flipper just because I've never had one! The next week it was a Sog seal pup elite. Things like knives and pens are meant to be used and enjoyed.

I say get the zt or put your ear to the ground and find another Kershaw talon.

Offering a reward is a good idea and may end up being the cheapest option.

If I were so in love with the design, I would either buy/commission a custom to be my "treasure piece." Though finding a horde of talons over a series of years would be a lot of fun.

Sorry that that happened, always stings a bit more when it's (likely) someone you know.

On the bright side, at least they left your tamper. :)

Some excellent suggestions here.. thanks all. I might try the reward idea - nothing to lose there when I think on it.

I was asked what especially I like about the Talon design. Well, there are several reasons for my passion. Firstly, the concave shape of the cutting surface draws the item you are cutting into itself. This is especially true/relevant on hard or tricky material - where a straight or convex shaped blade can cause itself to skate off the material as your wrist moves, the hook of the Talon just keeps bighting - meaning a more powerful, controlled and effective first pass, often leaving a deeper cut in which to locate the blade subsequent passes.

For many every day cutting tasks, the curved spike rules supreme. Dragging that tip towards you across a surface or through material is much easier than with a drop-point or recurve blade. To get the same mechanical advantage, control and ergonomics with a normal knife in these situations, you would have to either have the blade very deep in the material, or your wrist at an unnatural and hard to maintain angle. Also hooking under tight strapping or ropes is a breeze.

Lastly, the Talon looks and feels like nothing in your pocket. I took the clip off it and just let it sit in my pocket, my hand quickly learned to respond to the curve, and locate the flipper. Innocuous, but fast and effective.

(Choosing not to go into the wonderful kerambit-style defensive capabilities here)

Downsides? Not the best apple slicer. Be sure to warn muppets which side of the blade has the sharp edge - no kidding - the amount of people I loaned the Talon to who assumed the back of the blade was the edge-side is astounding - several significant injuries resulted...

Right. Decision made. Out of the box it comes... tomorrow... I won't stop looking for another one, and I won't stop looking for the next love-of-my-life in the offchance I lose this one too!

Thanks for helping me through my grief process :-)

Sorry for your loss NZ. I agree with others that you should use your new, in box Talon. That's what you bought it for. Keep on the lookout for another and buy it when you can.

And get yourself that BM 765. You deserve it.

The last time a guy stole something from me I broke his hand with a hammer.

On a lighter note, Fisher Space porn is very addictive, tread carefully:D

Ok guys... I'm definitely going to open it today....! Just as soon as I can drag myself away from the latest Space Porn installment... weightlessness sure does amazing things to the anatomy  :D
