Hi.

Few weeks ago i asked you the question which steel is the best choice for a beginner knife maker. Someone pointed the 5160 steel as a good start.

So i started searching. I know that usually this grade of steel is used for leaf springs for automobiles.

Recently i saw at my workplace a car with the folowing designation on its springs: " ... 6C11 5560 ...". Any idea about the second part of the label?

Is it a steel designation or just a part of the serial number? (I'm talking about Ford Transit 2006 release model, rear springs).

If this is a steel, can it be used for knifes?

Thanx.
Have a nice day.

I don't think type of steel is ever part of the part number. The numbers you give are not any type of steel. If you have a leaf spring or coil spring from a vehicle suspension it's likely to be 5160, 9255 or something similar and would make a good knife.
