HELP, My New KMG Is Dead

Received my new grinder yesterday afternoon and spent a little time putting together tool arms last night before turning in. This afternoon a came in from work and my battle buddy and I began wiring everything up. We went step by step thru the directions wiring everything step by step.

When all was wired, the VFD showed a fault which indicated "low voltage". We unplugged and re-examined everything and could not figure out what was wrong. Plugged it back in and received the same fault once again so we turned the power switch off. Decided to take a break and not get frustrated.

When I went back to it and turned the power switch on again, there was no fault and no indication of power. Utilizing a circuit tester, I show to have power going to the VFD but it is acting as though it is dead in the water.

What do I do???

I just checked the MDS J1B and J1C should be jumpered for 115V operation, if it is jumpered J1B to J1A it is set for 230V and will not run on 115V. Check that.

I'm a bit confused by the reference to J1(A,B,C). The J1 Jumper (white wire) is on 115V.

OK guys, anyone else have any ideas? I'm going to try to get on the phone with Rob and the customer service guys tomorrow, but I have 170 soldiers on my lane for training tomorrow and Friday. The likelyhood of me being able to talk with someone about this prior to Monday is looking pretty slim. I'm at my witts end and getting more frustrated by the minute. I've waited five years to buy this grinder and now I can't get it working.

I have read over these pages and even went thru them step by step over the phone with JT. He seems to be stumped on this one as well. I guess I will have to take it to the customer service guys and Rob whenever I can find the time to do so.

I find it a bit confusing that my circuit board is quite different than those in the diagram of the manual I received with it as well as the on-line manual.

Below are my current settings:

J1 115V,
J2 (hp setting) is set to 1 1/2, and
J3 (Automatic Ride Thru or Manual Start Selection) is set to "A" (automatic)
J4 2X
J5 60Hz
J6 Fix
J7 RG
J8 R
J9 NO
J10 CT
J11 A

Even if I have one of these wrong, shouldn't I still have the "Power" light illuminate and show a fault? Right now, I have no response what so ever out of the VFD.

Murph - if you ordered everything from Beaumont then give Rob a call, he should be able to help you with the wiring questions and determine if it's a faulty unit or incorrect wiring. I've even seen him help folks here with other companies' grinders.

Spoke with Rob during a break today. He seems to think it may be a faulty VFD. I've disassembled everything and repackaged to send back asap. Hopefully I'll get off of the lane in time to ship it tomorrow.

Murphy's Law, struck again!!!

seems like i have this anomaly happen to me on a rather regular basis .:(

but i lately have learned ---- slow down ask a few questions --- step back and sometimes wait for another day to tackle the sticky ones.

trying your patiences is not productive.

take it on a day to day term.
let the crap you experience today stay there, tomorrow is a new day.
hope this helps

think how lucky you are to have the finest grinder on the planet?????

I've been trying to change the law for 34 years now it seems. Everytime I think I'm making a difference, it sneaks up on me again. That's ok though, I waited five years to buy this grinder. Having to wait a couple more weeks won't kill me. Coming home to find a big box of belts I ordered from Tracy, sure did make it feel like salt being poured into a fresh wound though.

As I tell all of my troops that I train, "Any day you're not getting shot at or blown up is a great day." I've had more than my fair share of days I couldn't say that, so I count the ones that I can as true blessings from God. This is just another obstacle to conquer. I have no doubt Rob will have me up and running soon.

I'm glade you found time to talk to rob. Ya after talking to you it has to be a bad VFD.

Spoke to Rob again today. He received my VFD this morning and hooked it up to test everything out. He confirmed that it was "DEAD". When I shipped it back to him I made sure to leave everything as I had it minus the power cable and after he looked over it, he confirmed that I had everything right minus one minor adjustment which I had made after the error was found. It makes me feel much better knowing that I hadn't screwed up. The new VFD has been shipped and I should be up and running on Tuesday of next week.

Rob has really proven to me why he has the reputation that you all commend him with. You really can't ask for a nicer guy or better customer service. He deffinitely gets a Five Star Rating from me.

Once I receive the new VFD it will leave me a little over two weeks to grind before I have to take my wife on a cruise (I knew I'd end up paying for this grinder twice!!!). Maybe I'll be able to get a few blades ground properly and sent out for HT prior to my departure and have them back when I return. Wouldn't that be great? :D
