Before you make up your mind, I would suggest you hear what Garth has to say, they have been supplying "special" knives to the people in uniform for a long, long time.
You said he is deploying with the army, any idea what his role is? That could help in choosing the knife. TGLB is a good all around choice, personally I would choose something a bit smaller like Boss Jack, HG 55 (give this knife a look, it has been brought from the design requested by the military guys I think) or DSSF, but thats mostly because I think they would be more comfortable in my hand, and I prefer that blade shape. (you can look at Urban Grudge, but a lot of folks here will think it's to small, I personally love the feel of it, but even I have to admit all around utility of it is limited compared to other models discussed. I have it, and since I cannot carry a concealed fixed blade in CA, it just sits there with semi-grail status)
Some of the Basic models might actually be a better option for all around, and I hope someone can shed more light on this but the handle on the basic model seems like it would protect against electricity, there are situations when you have to chop a wire quickly (think about cutting lights in the building) and you don't want to end up served to your enemy extra crispy. For urban environment that would be a big plus. Another plus for the basic model is its value, usually they are cheaper, while retaining high Busse quality. Sometimes you'd have to leave the knife behind, and I'm not talking wet work here, but the nature of a tool means it can get wedged and stuck somewhere, you might need to use it as a crow bar, and while everyone here swears by INFI blades, and the warranty (and both are superb, I'm not sure if there is equivalent quality knives, and equivalent warranty anywhere today) they are still bound by the laws of physics, you can applied enough force break them and bend them. And while in rare instances that it would happen here, you would not worry about it because the Busse crew will take care of it (thumbs up guys on the company initiative and going a step on and beyond the warranty), in the field you might need to ditch the blade after it has been damaged all together.
