Help Needed In Selecting A Blade ......

I'm considering purchasing a new knife (either a folder or fixed blade) next week, and I would like some help deciding which blade would be the best of the following:

Folders:
Schrade CH18FE Sportmate
Emerson Commander BT
Buck 112FG
Buck 532BL 2000 Special Edition
Cold Steel Scimitar
Camillus 886 (as advertised here at BladeForums.com)

Fixed Blades:
Buck 119BR CocoBola Special
Buck 119

Any thoughts on these blades? Perhaps judging by the blades I have listed, someone can suggest alternatives of similar style that I should look into, if my choices aren't that good.

Also, can someone suggest a knife that is similar in style to my UC Colt AR-15-K Lockback Folder? I really like this particular style, but wouldn't mind a blade of higher quality.

Thanks in advance!!

M-D, for a folder I would suggest the Spyderco Native. Excellent blade steel, lightweight, affordable, and the best knife I've found in this size range.
For a fixed blade, the various Scandinavian brands are worth a look. These are a simple designs and you can pretty much pick your price range.

Hi!

As always i have to recommend the Emerson Commander!
I've got two '98 versions and they are a tad thicker/sturdier then the more recent versions.
But there's no faster knife out there to get ready to use!
And i think that fits my hand peeerfect

try to check out as many knives as possible before you buy, hopefully you'll get a feeling for which knives that you do like.

Hope that i helped

Paul: Thanks for the suggestions! I'll look into the Spyderco Native. What Scandanavian brands would you recommend?

2Sharp: I appreciate the comments! The Commander is a beautiful blade.

Metal-Demon - The knives you mentioned are all quite different. Perhaps if you told us what you plan to use this knife for we could better help you pick one.

If it's the tanto blade you like on your Colt, look at the BM Stryker, BM 722, & MT Socom.

Of the blades you've mentioned, I'd go with the Commander. But you might also want to look at REKAT knives, the Carnivore, Sifu, and Pocket Hobbit are wicked blades.

M-D,
The Swedish Mora knives (Frosts and Erikksen sp?) are very inexpensive, but worth considering. Helle and
Bruesletto both make vey nice pieces at a reasonable price. Kellam also has some excellent blades. Falkniven(sp?) is very popular right now. There are others. Hope this helps.

If you don't want to spend over $75 on a good folder, take a close look at the offerings by Cold Steel. Their Gunsite and Voyager models are great knives.

.

They also offer some pretty darn good fixed-blade knives, that won't "bust your bank".

Its unusual, but try a Ka-Bar D2 folder. I got mine thru the net for about $85. It has its minor faults, but with that steel I can forgive a lot!

For a non-tactical "user" that provides great value, reliability and ruggedness, without one-handed opening or a pocket clip, the Buck 100 or smaller 112 is hard to beat. Buck Knives has a great reputation for standing behind their products.

There are better, more modern or feature laden knives available, but who among us cannot say that they own and cherish a Buck Folding Hunter?

Now that I said all of that, please tell us what you plan to use the knife for and budget considerations.

I can't believe no one has recommended the BOLD above. The 532 special edition 2000, with BG42, is one of the best buy's of the year! If you're just looking for a good, quality folder, with good (no, GREAT! steel), that has gotta be it.

BG42 is my favorite stainless steel, maybe my favorite period, in the company of ATS-34, ATS-55, 154CM, CPM440V (S60V), M2, 1095, and D2. The only one that even comes close is D2. In my experience, the only blade that can surpass it, and that only in certain applications, is Talonite.

Plus, it comes with nice wood scales (the knife, that is).

First of all, petty thieves and vandals should be publicly whipped and have a finger (of their choice) cut off! I'll be glad to do it for them.

Now that my ranting is over.

FOLDERS: Out of your list, I like the Commander the best. That "wave" opening is da' bomb! So damn clever, making it faster than an automatic AND legal.

Not on your list are so many good production knives that I would like to get:

- How about the Microtech LCC (cheaper than Commander) designed by fellow Canuck, Greg Lightfoot?

- The many Axis lock knives of Benchmade. But my favorite is the 750 Pinnacle. A great knife that has to live in the shadow of the more popular Axis models. Unfortunately, I think some people disregard it as a cheap knock-off of the Sebenza. On the contrary. It is, IMO, what a knife should be: simple yet effective in design, strong, and -- best of all -- affordable.

- Spyderco, Spyderco, Spyderco! Gunting is next on my list!

FIXED BLADES:

- Busse = drool!
- Cold Steel tanto, but people will think you're a "would-be" assassin.

Lucky guy gets to go knife shopping.

BM 940. Wonderful knife. Now, having said that, you can currently get an old model Cold Steel Extra Large Voyager from ISKS for $35.99 shipped. Not bad at all...

I gotta go with Jason on this one and say the Benchmade 722. Might find a good deal on one in the For Sale forum. That or the 940 should fit with what you are after.

It all depends on Your budget and application. Benchmade AFCK in M2 steel is probably the best compromise. For less money Spyderco Native is great. But if You end up doing anything other than slicing, I strongly suggest looking at Benchmade knives in M2 steel. It is a lot tougher than any stainless I've seen (BG42 included) and the only stainless steels that hold an edge as well or better are CPM-440V and 420V.
Also, Kershaw Avalanche is a really nice knife, and it's fast!
