Hi there,

I need some help from the members here.

I bought a knife which is supposed to be NIB. However, when the knife arrived, I found 2 large rub / scuff marks on the knife handle. I am wondering if this is normal for a NIB knife.

I have attached a link to my webshots account where you can see pictures of the marks.

I have added pictures of the blade.

Here is the ebay link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6583315622&sspagename=ADME:L:RTQ:US:1&rd=1

Your kind opinion and answer is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Cheers.

Was this a knife that you purchased on-line from a retailer or from eBay or from someone here on the forums?

If it was from someone on these forums - I would FIRST kindly address them with your concerns and see how they respond. If they deny it, or fight it and you are not happy - leave feedback in the G,B & U forums. I would ONLY go this route if you and the other party cannot come to an agreement. In my experience - the people on this forum are some of the most honorable people I have had any dealings with - on-line or in person.

Most likely it would be a misunderstanding or a mistake - if you are not happy - ask for your money back and all you are out is the postage back to the person.

Good luck!

I would say its not normal for NIB. Its hard to tell if its the anodizing thats scratched, or if it is markings on top of the finish. I only say this because the picture it reminds me of the marks brass shells leave on the cartridge deflector of an M-16/Ar15. The marks look kind of brass colored in your picture. The rivets on jeans sometimes leave marks like this. Breakfree CLP works well at getting brass marks off the anodized finish, so you might wanna give that a shot.

Anything is possible with a single knife, but in my experience Benchmade is not one of the brands likely to have ugly scuffs from the factory. All of mine, even the cheap ones from Taiwan, looked clean.

Well its not a Strider so the thread wont go 40+ pages:D

...and I guess we don't have to expect several dozen people from BM's own forum to come over to address amlim's complaint. :D

I would say that a NIB knife should not look like that. I do know that the anodizing on BM's knives is fairly durable. If you have not done so, I would second the recommendation to try and clean it off a little. It's hard to tell from the pics if it is scratches in the anodizing, or material deposited on the anodizing.

If it does not come clean, then I would attempt a refund (full or partial) if you are not happy.

By the way, the 9530 is a great little knife. Really a lot of blade packed into the handle.

I would say that is no NIB condition. NIB should be NIB, and I have never gotten a new knife from the factory with scuffs like that.

Now, for a user, it probably doesn't really matter. If this is a collectors piece though, I wouldn't be all that happy with the person who traded it to me.

the desciption IMO should be more LNIB (like new in box) only with small scuff on the handle.

That is just one mans opinion though, others mat vary.

probably not quite several dozen, but several for sure, some might have even stuck around:D

i agree with carl,
anything is possible.

does the blade look used or previously sharpened?
it may not give you a deffinate answer, but might give some clues.

if you got it from the Bay then i would give more stock to it being used.
but if it wasnt, i could have been droped or scuffed in the factory.

IMO, i wouldnt bother sending it back, if i bought it to use. for me that knife has skipped the whole walkin on eggshells period. (thats not to say i would have been ok with that strider a while back)

on second thought after lookin at ALL the pictures (especially the pic of the butt), this knife was used

its not brass coloured. sorry about the picture quality. you can see shiny metal where the marks are.

i have the bad feeling that its not some material deposited on the anodising which can be cleaned off. rats.. i purposely bought this for my tiny collection coz its a great little knife.

rats.... i am going to post some pictures of the blade tonight. i am a real noob when it comes to knives.. :(

Dude it's still a great little knife. I am a user not a collector, but I would be a bit peeved if I bought a knife that arrived like that, but after a week of use by me it would be worse than that, so I am a bad example of someone to ask about it. Either way, just have fun with it. I just dropped $650 on a custom and I already managed to get some scratches on it. No worries. A knife unused is a knife abused.

Well it ain't NIB,but it's ok to use.If it was that way when you bought it it may be a thing of showroom handeling, though I doubt it...it DOES look like brass marks..maybe a return someone didn't like? try cleaning it-may come off ;)

its shiny metal where the marks are. i don't think its brass. reason being i have another 2 knifes with similar marks and i couldn't clean it off. the reason i am upset is because this knife is for collection purposes. not a user. :-(
