I am in the process of making my first knife and I have just finished hand rubbing it to 420 grit, I need to know if I have to go any higher (600+) before I send the blade in for hardening/ tempering.

I am using Bohler N690 s/steel and I want to obtain a mirror finish on the blade once I am done.

Your advise is appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

400 grit ought to be good for before heat treat.

Since your wanting to end up with a mirror finish, you may want to quickly hit it with some 800 grit then some 1500 grit before it gets treated. Sanding with the fine grits, especially 1500+, will highlight any deep scratches that you may be overlooking now with a 400 grit finish . . . but in all, a 400 grit finish should be fine.

Good luck,

Mike L.

I have been stopping at 120 grit before heat treat. No problems with any of them :)

I dont go past 400 before HT but I do hit it with the 600 real quick to check how good the 400 finish is. I hit it with the 600 then buff it lightly with some green to bring out any deeper scratches. Then i go back to 400 till they are gone. That way I dont have any real deep ones to remove after HT.

Thanks for all the feedback, the blade is going in tomorrow for heat treatment, can't wait to get it back
