I have the kmg clone and I need a different tool rest .I need a much wider tool rest to allow me to use a jig i saw and made for grinding.the rest I have now is only 4 inches wide and 3 inches deep. Ide like to see some of your tool rests that will allow me to slide a 10 inch blade across so im thinking the rest would need to be 14 inches wide , I do fillet knives max lenght 12 inches blade 8 to 9 at most. I am goinf to make a longer jig also to compensate for the blade lenght. this is what ive got for a tool rest all ideas welcome, kellyw

I put a peace of plate on top of the rest thats already there but the thing is
i made the belt side hinge to give me different angles. I had to put in a bolt on the other side to hold it at the angle i wanted. Have you got a pix of your jig?

Make a wide piece to attach on top of your original tool rest. Then get a thin piece of mylar and glue it on top of that. Long and smooth. This is a Nick Wheeler idea he gave me when I visited him. Jim

As someone who is in the process of building a clone. I am interested in any and all responces to this thread but, without pics it's hard to picture what you are talking about! :D

Instead of having the rest bolt to the side of the tool arm, have it bolt to the bottom or top. That way you can attach the arm of the rest to the bottom of your rest and make it as wide as you want.

Hellgap, in the extended toolrest I showed in the thread on push sticks, I made it so that it slides over the other toolrest and locks down with thumb screws. Made in this manner it can be built to wrap around the sides of the belt. This helps to prevent wedging the blade between the toolrest and the belt. The bottom side of the rest has a channel on each side to guide it into position while allowing forward and back adjustment. The thumbscrews go up through the channel to lock it down. Because it goes past the sides of the belt it needs to move quickly to facilitate belt changes.
I keep my extended rest in a drawer right behind where I sit at the grinder. I leave it off except when grinding blade bevels. It takes just a few seconds to install.
I hope this description helps.

It's not my place to share a ton of info on actually using this set-up as Tim Hancock came up with the idea and makes part of his living off teaching it.

However, this actual tool rest set-up is one of the ones that I came up with, so it should be fine to post it.

It's angle iron that's notched out to fit over the existing rest, then connected with a couple of recessed bolts. You can see one of the bolts, the other is covered by the knife blade.

I usually cover the tool rests with UHMW, but this one is covered with a fine canvas micarta.

With the angle iron, it's very rigid without being real heavy. :)

Thanks Nick thats the exact same grinder as mine and that is exactly what im looking for . I appreciate your concern for others lively hood as well. Where I am up here Nick there is no one that is willing to help anyone the ones that are willing to help live hundreds of miles away. Good deeds will return your way thanks

You're welcome :)

Just for the record, both of the blue grinders in the pic are KMG's from Rob, and the silver one is my Burr King (hated the green paint).

I often throw people off with the hot-rod paint jobs ;) :)
