Help needed (warning...I am a newbie)

He has the beautiful, handmade Heerden folding knife from South Africa, which if I may say so is a work of art. I want something badass but useable, but one he wouldn't buy for himself or one he would love to own. The Reeves looks incredible as well as the Mcusta.

All of these are available at bladegallery.com in the USA and are South African makers part of the Knife Makers Guild of South Africa.

I know this one is outside your budget at $595 but it is an Andre van Heerden. Runs on IKBS system so will be smooth as butter.

This one is from another South African Andre Thorburn at $535, also runs on IKBS and uses a front flipper.

These two are within your budget at $395 from Herucus Blomerus.

Wow Tanto... very, very, nice of you to offer this. Maybe if you are willing she can present him with a knife from her and one from her son? So generous of you!

Okay, I obviously stink at inserting an image, so I created a dang tumbler. This was the first stash I came upon and is a good representation. He probably has five or more other stashes. The really nice blade set apart from the rest is a Andre Van Heerden, the beautiful handmade blade. The good ones, the gerbers, the benchmades, etc are with him. He is right handed.
From his knives which were in the picture I think something big might be complementing his collection very nicely.
How about a BK-9 or a Kukri?

I'm surprised nobody's recommended Busse. Personally, I would have loved a big Busse when I was in.

As for the Striders, I'd stay away from em. I know lots of people swear by them, but as someone who served, knowing about Mick and the stories he told puts a bad taste in my mouth. I'm guessing your husband knows enough about knives to know the story behind that, and as a Ranger, may not look at Stryder in a very favorable light.

I find this one hard be a use there are so many good options out there in your price range. Emerson's, CRK, Strider, etc. I am going to recommend the Microtech Socom Elite and the Guardian Tactical Helix or Patron.

Wow guys,

She states that on a Army salary she is limited.

Obviously, many of you were not in the military.

The Benchmade 275, 375 (fixed) and the 2750 auto are all reasonable $ knives.

They also give a portion of the $ to the Ranger fund which assists fallen rangers.

Sounds like a big dude and he would like the Ranger sentiment.

Try BladeHQ or Cutlery Shoppe

As a guy with 33 years in, and multiple tours over, let me give you my two cents.

1. What you have invited (and received) is feedback from a number of people who have never been in your husbands position and who will push their favorite brand or model of knife. There's little or no objectivity. (There's also a lack of comprehension based on the number of replies that failed to note that you wanted a handmade knife. )

2. If your husband has the number of knives you say he does, most of what's been recommended is known to him. If he doesn't already own one there's a reason for that.

3. There's absolutely no reason you cannot get your husband a very good knife that meets your criteria.

I suggest you go to the "Exchange" section of this Forum. Look at both the fixed and folding sections under Knifemakers. Find something that catches your eye and purchase it. If you see something but it's already sold contact the maker, there's a very good chance they'll help you out.

My suggestion would be to get him a nice pocket knife. That way he can carry it around and show it off when he's not in uniform too. I know my little three bladed whittler got more use than any of my fixed blades did.

Amen brother.

It always slays me when someone gives VERY SPECIFIC perameters and everyone violates those limits with what ever is their favorite.

Is it just me???

What i cant stand is the people that say "for just X amont of money more you can get an even better knife"

^^^^As a retired Soldier, I'll say the above is the best advice to an Army wife looking for something special for her Soldier who already owns handfuls of knives.

If he isn't going to beat the tar out of his knife, you can get him a Spyderco Endura, either with a VG-10 blade or ZDP-189 blade (ZDP is prone to chipping, so if his knives see any hard use I would recommend against that steel). You could also look at a Spyderco Military (which comes in about a million variants).

The possibilities are endless.

amen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank God 1 person understands !!!!!!!!! this is why i made the other offer, which i wish i could have PMed.
I was embarrassed for members suggesting $$$ 3-4-5 hundred dollar knives, truth is, i feel, as former husband , father, brother, LTC Army that she was seeking help in a humble manner, these folks are givers, and no greater gift is it to lay your life out for some brother, you never meet.
