I know, I am French so I should know this. :o But I have no idea and can't find anything useful online.

Flame box elder burl?

Anyone has any idea how to translate this?

I don't know what the "flame" refer to (action in the wood?), but "box elder" is "Érable négondo" or "Érable à giguère".

How about: "Broussin d'érable à giguère" ou "Loupe d'érable négondo"? You can mix and match: "Broussin d'érable négondo" or "Loupe d'érable à giguère".

I prefer "érable à giguère" since my mother's name is Giguère ;)

I found some wood pens that refer to "Loupe d'érable teinté rouge" maybe?

I found also "Loupe d'érable à giguère" - that's what I'd use myself.

Thanks Pierre-Yves, that's perfect. And I'll use Giguère just for you. ;)
I bow down to your superior search FU.

PS: As a side note, this is for an application for the town I live in. They have a permanent art collection and I figured why not submit a piece, the 'Art Nouveau Dagger" in this case. They acquire about a dozen pieces a year for it. Wish me luck.

You're very welcome Pat; my mom is happy now!

Best of luck for the application; can't wait to see a Lemée knife in an art gallery!!!
Your work is certainly worth of being kept and displayed in a museum!

Thats pretty cool........good luck. I think I know which one you're entering..... :)

Thanks for the good words Pierre-Yves but we are talking more small town art gallery than museum here. If it makes it to the permanent collection it will be displayed in one of the town owned public buildings. I am hoping for the entrance of the Town Hall but will probably get the bathrooms of the Department of Sewers or something. ;)

Thanks again for your help my friend.

PS: I thought you might Larry. :D So while I have you here, what does the flame part mean?

Well theres lots of speculation as to why but heres one I thought seemed spot on..."why flaming box elder has it's flame, it is caused by damage to the tree, either by box elder beetles or by impact, wind damage, chainsaw enthusiasts...etc. When the damage occurs, fungus creeps in, grows, and migrates through the tree, giving the spectacular coloration"

Just to let you know that my knife wasn't chosen. Would have been fun, mostly to showcase knifemaking which is almost unknown around here. But I am pretty sure that this is not "artsy" enough. If I ever submit something else (but I probably won't) it would have to be WAY out of the box and in no way useful as a knife since any piece with a useful purpose is usually seen as Arts & Craft and not Art. Oh well...
