so i want to make a knife that will be used for carving wood and just cutting open boxes and stuff, i read some stuff about tempering your blade, but what temperature would be the best to temper it at in the oven?
and i might use an old file (not sure) do you need to temper an old file? because i guess it is made so that its strong.

Welcome to Bladeforums.
Best place to ask for help/ideas for knife making is Shop Talk, the Customs & Handmade section is a bit more for finished pieces.

Welcome to Shop Talk.

Start with filling out your profile. the info helps us give better answers.

The stickys have all the info you need. There is a section on making a knifer from a file that would be good for someone with nothing but a kitchen oven. Once you have read all that, make a sketch and give your plans on how you will make the knife. Include what equipment you have and how you plan on doing the steps. Folks here will help with suggestions and advice.

Lots of reading to do...so get busy.

The info on knife making is Front end loaded so to speak! :) Lots of stuff to read and then lots of time burning your fingers etc..

It all works out to better knives! Read 12345678910"s link, about the most complete list of everything around.

Have fun and stay safe!
