this is my first post...so bare with me...I'm in the navy out to sea right now..and I'm also an amateur knife maker...well...to be precise...I haven't made one yet...still working on it...but yea...I have all the equipment onboard to shape, sharpen, and complete the process...except for the hardening and tempering of the blade...anyone know of a SIMPLE but effective way to do it? or atleast a company that I could ship it to, so they could get it done right and quickly? I'm not able to check here so if your able to..email me the reply's to kilgore.matthew@lincoln.navy.mil

Quick answer here, and you still have some research to do, but as long as you are dealing with most basic non-stainless steels, you can actually make a serviceable useful knife with little more than an acetylene torch for heat source, mineral oil for quenching and makes friends with the galley cook and use his oven for tempering.
This is just to let you know it can be done.

I wasn't sure but thought most Navy ships had HT ovens in their machine shops..... course I was in the Army have minimal experience with our waterborne Sister service :p

Really need to know type of steel to help with hardening. I am sure that the engineers have something that would get it hot enough to harden. Tempering would be around 400 so even the galley rats :D could help you out there

They must have an oxy/acetylene torch so harden with that and temper in the galley ! Stck to simple steels !
