So the post about a bashpati got me thinking about my lack of knowledge on khukuris. I have known i wanted HI's since i laid eyes on them. I originally was going to order a sirupati then as you might know my welcome to the forum was all the wonderful help i got in aquiring my gopte an m43 and a Cak.

Well i still want a khuk for the car or carry or at work. I have guns for real carry but by carry i mean something lighter weight light duty knife work and self defense if need be.

Not too short not too long just righ .

So my questions.

I like the Dhankuta on the website especially the handle but dont need the fancy sheath. Does auntie have a style like this not as fancy or similar?

The kumar kobra looks intriguing but at 18" would that be too long? Anyone with this one ? Or do they make a shorter one?

12 " 15 " or 18" sirupati i read some old posts from bill and users who like it def the style that first drew me to HI.
So between the 3 sizes which size do you guys seem to like best.

Is the bashpati available at other times than special runs or do you need to order one?

Lastly thoughts on chitlangi in this mix?

I have the 3 heavy choppers already so now for finesse.

I appreciate all the insight, so far you have not steered me wrong other than helping to lighten my wallet.

I did not want to bombard auntie with these questions as i am sure she has answered all these many times before.

Thanks again.

Hi,
I would suggest the 15" Sirupati. It has been a great outdoors knife for me, both camping as well as hiking. Weighs just a pound, so it is easy to handle, and yet the spine is thick enough that it can do a full days job. Perfect all around knife. The CAK is great for cleaving, chopping, but heavy for trail clearing - something that needs a lighter less tiring knife. The 18" CAK (litlle over 2lbs) I leave at the camp for evening firewood gathering - the Sirupati goes everywhere. The CAK is a superb knife for all around camp use - heavy and virtually indestructible, but my needs are for a lighter knife on the trail.

Another positive - my Sirupati is very sharp and does great as a cooking knife as well - the blade is thinner than a CAK and that really helps. Another great "cooking" knife - is the YCS karda.

Hope this helps. These were my recent purchases and they have been absolutely excellent. I remember khukris from my childhood in India - grew up with Gurkhas in the north and I had used them a lot, a long time ago as a kid gathering firewood. Only now do I realize how versatile they are, and why they are so prevalent.

Just my 2 cents.

The 15 was the one that drew me to HI, yet i ended up with 3 diff ones lol. i definitely am looking for an all around khuk for the next one. I have a feeling like all pursuits this quest has no end. Thanks i appreciate your insight.

For an EDC, light carry, possible self defense khukuri.

A Bura Daily Carry, (i have no pic, as alas, I don't have one yet), baby CAK, baby Foxy Folly, Reti, Sirupati, Kobra, Kothimoda, Bilton, or Pen.

I would upload pics, but having some difficulty, I will try later.

The Baby Foxy Folly would be a good knife general purpose knife. No where near the 15" length. A standard Foxy actually would fit that bill. It's thinner and lighter and gosh durn pretty too.

The Katunje (aunties own special knife) is a good smaller knife too. In the Bura Daily Carry range. Smaller handle but very handy.

I think there's no end to this quest is the correct assumption.

I forgot, the Katunje (Like Mr. B said), and the Pacthar would work too.

So the katunje seems intriguing. Are these all special order blades or do you just contact auntie and see what she has? Also does anyone have the dhankuta? Compared to these others.

Contact auntie, see if she has what you would like. If not, you can place a special order, or just wait for it to show up on the DOTD.

Sorry, I do not have a Dhankuta, I'm sure someone will come along and post pics of one and such.

All of these are great suggestions for EDC style or light hiking blades, but I'm not sure that's what you're looking for if an 18" Siru is in the running. For a light duty khuk, look at a KLVUK. And by "look at" I really mean definitely get. They're 15", around 15-20oz, and no frills. You can probably scoop one for $60-70.

For what it's worth, my "normal" HI selection process is as follows: Mini Micro Bowie for EDC, 12" BDC for hiking/scouting, 17" M-43 + Mini Micro Bowie for "exploring" and such. I'll take the KLVUK out for some brush or to lend to a friend for a walk, but if I'm being honest with myself, I don't really need any more than those first 3 blades.

Here's my dhankuta. It's just under 13'' OAL and about a 1/4'' thick at the thickest point.

It's a 2003 Convention Special made by Bura and a treasured piece. Bone / Horn combo handle. Kind of a large Bilton in some ways.

So this is the second post ive asked in that the klvuk comes up so i think i need to order one. Lol is the klvuk something that auntie has in stock usually and you just email or do you guys just send her a wish list and hope she has some. I dont want to waste her time asking what she has in stock if she has everything. I will buy just not sure how to ask now that i have been given a broad selection and now i have prob another 10 khuks on the list.

I think most of use have a KLVUK, or DVUK, or similar blade, for the all around, light carry, do everything, no worry about keeping pretty blade, not to mention it's very affordable, and the one you'll probably grab the most.

Just email auntie she'll most likely have them stacked around somewhere in the holy khukuri shed or garage...:).

They do not come with a sheath, you could ask auntie if she has a, extra sheath laying around, or have Pugs75 or Singlegrind make ya some pants outta leather or kydex.

Awesome I think once I decide on another khuk I will add a klvuk into the order I still want a slender blade for carryish situations not sure thanks to all the options thrown my way, but I definitely need a klvuk at this point methinks.

I don't have a Sirupati. The 14" Kobra looks like it belongs in the hands of a secretive assassin. There's nothing 'utility' about it.

It's awesome, made by Kumar, very sharp/perfect.

My 12" Pacthar is light and an interesting blade shape. It's pointy! If it catches a branch right at the bend it rips through it.

I've heard nothing but great things about the Sirupati. There's a few stories about them going to war in the sandbox on here too. A 16" Siru would rock I think.

I have a Gelbu Special. It's a "Speed over Strength" knife. It's 20" so it really doesn't qualify as a knife - it's a lightsaber. It's pretty amazing.

ASTK or the KVLUK look absolutely amazing. I also like that Amar Singh Thapa was a hero of Nepal. It's got to be a darn good knife.

Kancha Kami Knife is special and has a great story. "Jungle Knife" is also in the "Hidden Catalog" and looks good.

Tamang is more common and looks outstanding.

Get one of these and let me know too? Thanks! I'll let you know how my TC is when it comes.

I know that was clear as mud but for pure utility I think it would be KVLUK, ASTK, or Tamang for me at this juncture. Or the Siru if you want something that has those gorgeous womanly lines and could murder a league of delinquents if you were in a bind.
