I had this piece of metal laying around it is a locking bar for a craftsman rolling tool chest. I used it for some practice grinding and decided I liked the grinds and want to finish it. Any ideas on what it?

It's junk. The locking bars on tool chests are definitely not made of high carbon steel.

Many will tell you that it is junk steel....but they are wrong. Junk is useless............Pound it into the wall stud and use it as a coat hanger.

Welcome to Blade Forums, the lock bar did serve its purpose,It got you intrested in makeing knives, now put it in a drawer to keep around and remind you of where you started.Get a good piece of steel and make another.

Do yourself a favor and listen to the makers here.

Don't waste your time thinking you can make a good knife out of a piece of "mystery" steel.

I see so many posts similar to these, with the OPs thinking they can make a useful tool from some kind of reclaimed or mild steel.
Do yourself a favor and buy some 1084 from Aldo. Buy the 48" stock, and you'll probably end up using 4-7$ on average.

I was just having some fun.

Welcome to Bladeforums and Shop Talk. The stickies have a wealth of info on making knives, steel choices, and HT. The overwhelmingly accepted starter steel is 1084.
