Hey guys, notice that many of you seem to be fairly avid fisherman. I live up state in NY and go fishing 4-5days a week spring through fall and ice fishing once a week or so in the winter (ice thickness permitting). I want to get a good solid knife for this fishing season, I had an older schrade sharpfinger that I had used for years but sadly it was lost last season. So now I'm trying to pick a new one. Any advice on what to get would be appreciated. What knives do you guys use when fishing?? Right now the ones I have in mind/ considering are the spyderco catcherman, an opinel slim no.10, another sharpfinger. Let me know what you think.

Check out the large Havalon Baracuta. It can be purchased with 4 1/2" replaceable filet bades.

For a fixed blade knife used for bait, lunch, whatever, my fishing knife is an orange Mora Companion is stainless.

Here's an older pic from when I received it:

I carry a Leatherman Charge. One handed opening blades , pliers, hook sharpener, jig eye paint remover. I dont have to carry any other tool.

If you liked the Sharpfinger I would seriously look into getting another. There really isn't anything like them. There are a couple of makers on the forum here that are making custom Sharpfingers. Keith Willis makes some really nice ones at very reasonable prices (I think he has a couple available now if you PM him) and Ryan Weeks makes some that are simply out of this world.

Both of these guys are great guys to work with. You sure can't go wrong getting a blade from them.

I hate to say it, but I feel the new Schrade Sharpfingers are junk. I agree with the Mora idea, that was my first thought.I just would go for Carbon, personally.

Absolutely. There are thousands of old Sharpfingers out there though. I wouldn't think of buying one of the new ones.

I use a Fallkniven F2. The blade's a little stiff, but the steel stays sharp for a long time and the handle material stays very grippy in slimy conditions.

I'm gonna have to buy another sharpfinger. Anybody know how to tell if it is a good old schrade or one of the new no so good ones? I'm also gonna try to pick up a catcherman, a mora and maybe that fallkniven before spring to try out and sell if I'm not a fan.

Here is all the information on Sharpfingers that you could ever want. If you find one that you're interested in and aren't sure about it, you can ask guys like Codger_64 and others around here.

Unfortunately the Spyderco Catcherman is no longer in production. It was really what you wanted. Check out the Spyderco Pacific Salt. It will not rust on you, though the blade isn't perfect for filleting a fish. I'm sure it could get the job done, though.

I just use a $5 rapala bait knife.. Partially serrated helps cutting random things quickly. Comes with a sheath and I put a ball chain through it to hang on the neck. It's stainless and I don't care if I lose it in the river. I use it to bleed out salmon or whatever I catch. If I'm skinning, that's a different story.

I bought a friend of mine a Mora Scout to use as a fishing knife. But we fish for trout. If you need to skin or scale your fish then one of the longer, thinner, more flexible knives might be in order.

Although I recognize that people use Sharpfingers, which were designed as a big game skinning knife, for everything; I would think a Mora would be a far better fishing knife --- . I have an old Sharpfinger (early 70s) and it isn't stainless.

I'll bet that if you try a Mora, you'll like it.

what about the 7 step kershaw knife?? it was made for fishing. I am sure if you ask the kershaw guy here on the forms he could help you out.

Original Sharpfingers are sweet knives. One of these days I'm going to track one down.

Aside from that, here's my fave - Scagel Bird & Trout. Perfect size for small game and fish, and classy as all get out:

I think I'd give up my Sharpfinger if I could find one of those. That's a beauty.
