I need help picking a pocket knife. Nothing over 100.00. I'm looking at a Spyderco Peter Herbst Folder that is discontinued. The blade is made out of ATS-55 steel. Or the Spyderco Endura the blade is made of
Aus-6. I don't know alot about types of steel. What will hold a egde better? If you know of any other knives that will make a great pocket knife let me know. I don't want it over 4 1/2 closed. It will be one I will carry everyday
Thank you
Jeremy

I would suggest a current model Spyderco Endura Lightweight (Model SC10PBK). The new lightweight model is made with VG10 alloy which is superior to either AUS-6 or ATS-55 alloy. If you expect to keep the knife for a long time I would get a plain edge model since serrations are a pain to sharpen and the serrations lose their shape with repeated sharpening.

If you can find a Almar Nomad for 100 bucks grab it,I just got one from a friend and it is SUPERB. Best folder I have ever owned:)

Im not so sure if you are set on the spydies, but I like Benchmade knives. I really like my mini afck liner lock with 154CM steel. A friend of mine has the same knife only in a older model and his is made out of ATS-34. The mini afck has a blade length of about 3.25 inches and rides nice in the pocket. You can get one for anywhere between 59-69 bucks. Oh yea, they hold a edge very nice! If you don't care for liner locks they sell the same models with the new axis locks although for more coin. Good luck

Whatever model you get, get one without serrations. They compromise blade utility because you loose the longer straight edge that is useful for general utility tasks. If you don't "polish" a portion of the edge, you will get the benefits of a "toothy" edge like serrations without all the drawbacks.

I am a huge fan of Spyderco for "quality" value oriented purchases from a mass market manufacturer. Their build quality is very consistent.

Benchmade used to be a favorite of mine. After things changed a few years back, I got a couple of unimpressive knives and quit buying them. One blade was brittle, a couple had blade wobble, and I got rust staining on a stainless model  YMMV, and yes, I am a slow learner at times.

For a specific knife model not metioned yet, how about a Spyderco Wegner? Oh, that's right, it ain't tactical so it was dropped for slow sales :(

I'm with Storm Clouds on this one, though I'd also like to mention:

Spyderco Delica FRN PE (FRN means "black plastic handles" and PE for "plain edge")

Spyderco Salsa

Benchmade 921 Switchback

Those are the best slicers I own. The Delica and the Salsa are way more affordable.

Another vote for the plain edge Endura in VG10, my feeling is that VG10 will hold an edge much better than AUS6 and will be much easier to sharpen than ATS55 (though I should mention that I´ve never used ATS55). If you wish, a search will find plenty of comments.

I have a VG10 Delica, great knife, like the Endura in a smaller size.
