Help Picking My 1st Spyderco.

I bought my little brother a Tasman Salt as a gift. He does a lot of camping, rock climbing, sweating, and not taking care of anything. Ive got to tell you I was really impressed with that little knife! I was so impressed in fact that I ordered myself 3 Spydercos tonight when I got my refund check in from Uncle Sam. I highly recommend that little Tasman Salt.

The Military has a bit of length to it. For me, when I remove it from my pocket my thumb and index finger are already next to the hole for easy opening.
If it was tip up I would have to reach all the way in my pocket or juggle it around to position my hand for opening.

Weech3.
It may need reassembly after hard use but to be honest I was surprised it held up with 0 permanent damage and after reassembling came out like before solid and strong.
Manix 2 Caged ball bearing.
The spring is very very strong, nothing at all like the Axis lock.

Enjoy

Anybody ever try converting the military to tip up?

I haven't but some have. You could have it done and still have less in it than the price you mention.

I'm another that feels the Military is the best design Spyderco has, and for me by a pretty wide margin. It has a great handle, and alot of distal taper in the 4" blade making it a super slicer. I don't know of another knife by any company that has as good a size to weight ration as the Military.

I also only carried tip up until I got my first Military several years ago. Its still the only knife I'll carry tip down as it just works on the Military.
You could try one for awhile and if you didn't like it you could get it converted to tip up. Or you could sell it if you didn't like it, but Its hard not to love the Military once you get your hands on one.

I know you said no ball lock but I also am going to recommend the Manix 2 XL. Often carry mine at work where there's more likely to some hard use going on. Things a handful of tough cutter that I find easy to carry.

Hey guys.
I just figured I'd check in. It's been a while now and I must say that I was indeed bitten by the spyder. I haven't dedicated all of my attention to spyderco, but I now certainly hold them on par (or above) the rest.
To quench the thirst of a hard use, cold weather applicable folder I've now settled on a ZT0301st. It's large, grippy, tough as hell, and has speedsafe engaged by a flipper.
On to the spyderco journey...
I've now tried:
Delica 4 frn black combo edge (not enough blade for the combo)
Endura 4 frn black combo edge (not enough blade for the combo/ handle is a bit too long for me)
Manix 2 ltwt blue plain edge (the steel wasn't impressive, and it just seemed flimsy)
Para 2 camo/satin (awesome...but decided I'd rather have the camo/black-still hunting)
Delica 4 zdp-189 frn (brown scale swap) plain edge (awesome)
I love the Delica. It's the only pattern I've kept thus far. I'm always drawn to "collecting" them now.

Currently the only Spyder I've kept is the zdp Delica 4...it's just awesome; I LOVE the zdp-189 steel, awesome weight/utility/convenience, etc.

So...that's my up-to-date sitrep. I figured I'd check in now that I've got some spyder-mileage.

Any and all input is welcome, I've been missing the forums...my new phone won't let me type on bladeforums for some reason, so I have to bust out the laptop to contribute, and with my schedule that's a bit tough.

Best regards guys, be well and stay warm! And thanks again for all of the guidence thus far.

Weech, good on the Delica. It is always nice to have thread closure as many folks ask questions in a thread and don't respond back to let others know of their decision.
