Help! Quench Question?

You can order 5 gallon pails from these folks and the shipping is reasonable. Call them their friendly and cater to knife makers. I buy Parks 50 and Parks AAA from them.

But do they sell quantities less than 5 gallons. The issue I am having is finding dealers that will sell in smaller volume. Any ideas?

I will say that I have had decent results in canola. Just a thought. I'm not an expert, but I got a pretty nice grain.

A gallon of mineral oil from Tractor Supply served me well for a couple of years before I got oil from Maxim. It isn't the same, but it's more predictable than used motor oil, goop, etc.

any thoughts on texaco 70 and working with 1084 and 1095. I have found where i can get it by the gallon.

I used veggie oil and some others for my 1084 knives. Once I bought Parks #50, it took my blades to a whole other level. More consistent and though I can't prove it with a RC tester, I believe my hardness went up a bit as well. (judging how the steel ground and worked post HT) The knives I made after going to P#50 also seemed to hold an edge better. Well worth the expense imho.

And no, Maxim does not sell in quantities less than 5 gallons. But that's okay, because you'll need five gallons sooner or later :)

I can't help you on the Texaco 70 oil. Seems like I remember it being a slow quench oil. If that is the case, it wouldn't be ideal for either 1084 or 1095, but don't quote me on that. Someone with a better memory of quench oil speeds will come along shortly ;)

Here's my only oil comparison. 1084 with digital temp control. When I quenched in mineral oil, I had to temper at 425 to get to RC 60 and not have the edge chip out. When I switched to a 10 second oil from Maxim, I had to bump my temper up to 450 to get 60/61 with no edge chipping. The point? My new, faster oil was getting better martensite conversion than the mineral oil.

Thank you for all your input I greatly appreciate it . This is why I love this forum you all take a moment of your time to help out. I have decided to put together another quench tank and will be using one with park 50 and the other will be canola. I think it will be fun to compare the two. For anyone else that is looking into getting park 50 the cheapest by far is maxim $134 to my door in Minnesota for a 5 gallon bucket. If anyone else is trying to find quality oil under five gallons the only two places are Mc Masters and Jantz, but neither of the two have fast quench.
