Thanks everyone - I see some additional knives suggested here I like but I hadn't looked at before and put them on my list. I'd forgotten to mention previously but in addition to the Buck Open Season Caper - they also have an Open Season Small Game (see below) which in practice seems to have a shorter blade than their specs suggest if you just consider the length of the sharpened edge (vs where the 'handle' ends). I'll probably tire kick around at picking something over the holidays (got my deer - no more hunting this season).
I can be flexible - those bullets I put up were my starting point based on my personal preferences and experience and I have added a few possibilities based on this thread. Heck I've been getting by 'OK' with an older 5" long Edge Mark Solingen I've had since the 1970s (it has a clip type blade too).
