help school me w/ urban survival edc

It might also be helpful to have shortwave reception on a radio since a nationwide circuit outage would provide little local or country news and information.
At one time I would have agreed with this, but I'm not sure how useful it would be anymore. Its been a while since I did any serious short wave listening, because it seemed like with the prevelence of the internet, satallite and cable TV, that most of the major english language international SW broadcasters (BBC, Radio Netherlands, Radio Canada International, etc, etc.) were all cutting back or eliminating their north american broadcasts, and the regional SW stations are dominated by religious programing. :(

Still, I suppose it could not hurt to have SW capability.

cool little radio- I like the idea of short wave, wish it had weather though

here's another item that wouldn't take up much room (and weigh nil), but might prove handy- small dust mask (or two)- a lot of different scenarios where there may be particulates in the air- a bandana/buf would help, a mask in addition to a bandana would help more

The dust masks are good...as long as you don't have a beard...then they only help a little. Masonry dust is very fine and gets between pretty much any crack.

Whatever I EDC I want it to be able to be stretched out to take care of most scenarios that I could encounter. For me, in my pockets ever day, its this:

Keys w/ SAK Classic Alox
Phone
Mini Bic w/ some Duct Tape wrapped around it
Fenix LDO1
Wallet w/ Cash
Watch
Benchmade Grip 551
Bandanna
Schrade Tactical Pen

Depending on how I am feeling
SAK Farmer
and or
RAT Izula w/ handles

With this I figure I can take care of most possible situations with the absolute minimal gear. I hate a bunch of stuff in my pockets and these all fit great in a pair of old fashioned 5 pocket jeans. I also carry an EDC bag. I do not carry it everywhere I go but it is in whatever car I am riding in or house that I am at. It has a lot more gear in it. Its got a full FAK, RAT RC3, pack towel, pens, markers, small survival kit, small repair kit, phone charger, winter hat, things like that.

^ I'm w/ you- hate a bunch of stuff in my pockets, I've seen a lot of pics of key rings of death and think there is no way I'd suffer that

I prefer a neck carry for my knife (small fixed blade) and typically I add an item or two (or three :)) to the lanyard or directly to the sheath- this helps keep pockets relatively clog free

I also try and make the most out of my wallet that I carry w/ a few small items in it (besides the normal cash/cards)

I also carry a Buf folded up in a rear pocket in lieu of a bandana- like a bandana- very multi-use for very little room/weight

Heh! Same here, I hate stuff in my pockets. I've got my key ring trimmed down to three keys (house, car, mailbox) and a small LED flash. Overall, I try to limit myself to one item per pocket. Generally, that means knife (RF), keys (LF), wallet (LR), bandana (RR). Anything else goes into a pack of some sort (waist, shoulder, or back)

I try to keep my wallet as slim as possible. Its not one of those baseball sized lumps that some people carry around, but its still bigger than I wish it was.

Although many countries have reduced coverage there are still a number of them that still broadcast clearly in English to North America.
Damn! I used to be a moderatly avid SWL myself since back in my high school days. A few years back I talked myself out of buying a new Grundig Satellit by convincing myself it wasn't worth investing $4-500 in a dieing hobby. Now I may have think about going out and pick up a new reciever again. Just when I thought I had gotten rid of one expensive hobby, you pull me back in! :p
