Good evening folks. I have a small Sebenza S35VN and have, for the last week, been trying to sharpen it with a Sharpmaker. I'm just not developing much skill and am not at all pleased with the results. Can an alternate method/system be suggested? Something effective that wouldn't require as much skill? I would like a system that will also work on a hard material (ZDP-189 Caly3). Thanks so much.

I have the sharpmaker but I have the ultra fine edge rods ... you need them to get that really nice surgical edge. You need to order 2

Also you need to sharpen it at 30 degrees to thin the blade a little then back at 20 degrees to get a keener edge. The Sebenza's blade comes with a lot of material on it and is not the thinest cutter out there. http://www.cutleryshoppe.com/diamondsharpmakerhones-pair.aspx these Diamond rods will cut the S30v or s35VN real good.

When you are sharpening make sure you take it slow to medium speed so you really are watching you are doing...do not use too much pressure...let the rods do their thing....Also clean your rods with a rag and dishwashing soap before you start so they are ready.

Use the 40 degree setting on the sharpmaker, otherwise you are just reprofiling the blade. That can literally take hours and hours.
Click here for an entire subforum devoted to sharpening strategies and equipment. Also, you might want to watch the sharpmaker video. It provides all the instruction you would need.
