So I have a wicked edge with gen 3 clamp

Looking for some pointers on clamping my PM2's and my manix

I've been experimenting with my manix on clamping but would like to get a decent system down for FFG's before I put my beloved PM's in for edge surgery

They sell a special attachment. It's called an edge pro, lol. [emoji12][emoji41]
Kidding, I'm actually thinking about getting a WE myself so I'm following this thread for sure.

I think I'm going to tear it apart and model up some parts in CAD then let my creative mind wonder until I come up with something

Make a print and then have one of the machinists make something for me.

I had an earlier generation WE. It was not spyderco friendly. The colored pieces of plastic on the stone holders will hit the ricassso when sharpening the very last bit of the blade so they need to be filed down or milled off.

My earlier version didn't evenly hold FFG knives well at all. From what videos I've seen of the newest generation clamps they don't do a good job either.

I suggest not even trying to get it even. Just get it clamped on and pushed over to one side. Then adjust the arms to compensate. Some math with a angle cube will be necessary.

Next solution will be an edge pro.

Anyone have any ideas about sharpening the first part of the blade

I'm thinking it's handle modification time

You can either remove the lip on the stones

Add a sharpening notch like some Benchmades have

Or just live with it.

I choose to live with it.

If you remove the lip on the stones be very careful. You could just remove the lip on the bottom 1/2 of one side so your fingers are still somewhat protected.

This is what i did...but only took about an inch off.. works great

I thought the gen 3 clamp was full floating and would conform to both the ffg and the tapered spine.

The Gen 3 clamp is symmetrical (unlike previous generations) but not free floating. It doesn't conform to FFG blades, or to distal taper.

Disappointing, given that this is a known issue. I sold mine.

The TechStudio system has an adjustable clamp for FFG but I have no personal experience.

This is alarming because talking with Kyle at WE he assured me that the gen 3 vice is ideal for the spydercos and a para 2 would have no problem.

Is it not "free floating" as described in the W.E. video (at least both sides of the clamp would match the angle but not distal taper of a FFG)?

It looks like it should clamp on a FFG, although would not compensate for a distal taper.

Ok that's how I thought it worked. Some foam tape just on the tapered side of a para 2 would should fix that and if that's so I'm ok with that.

As soon as I get my assortment of knives sharpened I'm going to take mine apart and get to modeling some ideas to get both planes

Being that all but one of my small collection of knifes are FFG spydercos I have a vested interest in coming up with something

That and I just love to tinker

Received my ball joint arms and gen 3 vice. I like it! You still have to wedge the thin end of a spyderco FFG but the lever lock is real, real nice.

Agreed

One thing I noticed is if you have the handle potion of the knife down lower

So the flat portion of the top of the blade isn't flat on the height key

The thickness match up pretty well

It would probably be best if I just took a picture instead of describing it
