Hey guys,

I'm looking to get a new traditional folder and I could use some help!

These are the specs I'm looking for:

-50$ or less

-Single blade

-over 3 inches

-Easy front pocket carry (opinel's are too bulky for me)

I already have a case mini copperlock that I love because it disappears in my pocket. I was looking at an ag russel cowboy or rancher for a while, but I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions? I'm a fan of traditional slip joints and lock backs, but I'm open to anything you guys can think up.
Thanks for the help!

-Cooper

Oh also! I usually use my knife for things like cutting every day items (packaging, cardboard, loose clothes strings) but also often food items, which is why over 3 inches is prefered. This means I also like a thin blade more often than not.

Thanks again for the help!

Case slimline trapper. Fits your specs and does exactly what it says on the tin. :)

Good option, the Slimline is surprisingly versatile.

Any Sodbuster from CASE or RR (some of them have a liner lock tab too for security)

Yu could try this Queen Cutlery Barlow Workhorse. Carbon blade, delrin handles. Strong, nicely finished and the Sheepfoot blade is an excellent cutter. Cost me 40 USD and that included postage to Europe, a bargain!

Check out the Mercator or whatever brand the kat knife is. Also the Victorinox 111mm series, those have a nice thin blade that would suit your needs perfectly.

I would give a +1 to the Case sodbuster! Carbon or stainless steel, nice and slim, and well under $50:thumbup:

Boker has several single blade trappers that are well made for the price. Queen #11 utility (basically a slimline trapper) is also a good option.

Case Yellow Synthetic EZ Open Trapper
Item #2773 - (3154EZ SS)

Just under $40. It's an exclusive by a particular Case vendor, so Google what I posted above to find it.

Locking or non-locking? Really the models Lycosa mentioned are good ones, and A G Russell has a good selection of traditional style folders at the price point you mentioned. He carries seconds as well. Stick with stainless if you're going to cut food with it. Case sodbusters, or any for that matter, are always good; the bone handles from Case are thinner in pocket. Personally, if I needed to do lotsa cutting, I'd look for something locking. Good slip joints rarely fold under heavy use, but it does happen. Buck certainly has models that lock at your price, and are pretty common. Is there anywhere near you that you could actually handle a knife? That might be a good idea. Good luck.
Thanks, Neal

I'm looking for a real sort of every day, in the pocket, small task sort of knife. I have other knives for when i really need to do a bunch of cutting so a lock is not a must. I will check around for a good knife shop, thanks for the advice neal!

Definitely a solid contender. I don't know how but i completely forgot about this pattern. You guys are making this a much harder choice, thanks for the help!

Queen's #41 Copperhead has a single clip blade just under 3" in length, with a closed length of 3¾" for the knife. Comes in slipjoint and linerlock versions, with their excellent D2 steel. May be just over the $50 limit, but worth the extra $$.

Sodbusters can be pretty chunky. If the CV sodbuster jr were about 1/8" thinner, I'd carry it all the time.

I say look st the slimline trapper. Probably my favorite pattern. Despite being larger than I usually like to carry in pocket, at about 4 1/8" closed (I generally shy away from knives that run longer than about 3 1/2" closed), in actual use, it's very easy to pocket. Slimline is no empty boast.

I think Queen recently did a run of slimline trappers for their Workhorse line, in carbon steel. Similar dimensions to the Case, but I think the blade sits higher when closed and is more pinchable, which is kind of nice.

I'm an enthusiast of the Slimline Trapper too, especially Barehead forms- saves weight looks better.

As for Sodbusters, if you want a thinner one with CV then look at CASE's Chestnut Bone, still within the price range too.
